I'm at the point where I'm satisfied with my office/home rig and want to look at building out my portable rig as I begin traveling (worldwide) more and cannot stream or fit everything on my iPhone 6+.

I have an unused iPhone 4s (30pin connector) that I can dedicate to portable music using the Onkyo player. But with the price and reviews I'm seeing on the Fiio X1, that could also be an option if it is that much better.

The Core Question: Anyone have recommendation to go one way or the other? iPhone 4s or Fiio X1?

Context

Likely headphones:
1. RHA T10i (when they hit the market) for walk around
2. HD-598 for hotel room and long car trips
3. Something for working out (as yet undetermined, maybe the JayBird BlueBuds X if I go with iPhone)

Compute environment: All desktops/laptops (4) are macs, servers (4) are linux with two windows VMs for testing and rare windows needs

Music:
  1. 200gb of 16/44 ALAC ripped from CDs (easily converted to FLAC with XLD)
  2. Genres: Classical, Jazz, Ambient/Lounge, OST, and once in a while some Classic Rock or 80s

What else to add on?
  1. External DAC+Amp for the iPhone?
  2. ?

The FiiO X1 should provide better audio quality, then the iPhone 4s.

Just found that the X1 does not use Composer metadata to access music -- will not be getting one for the time being!
