Im looking for spend around 1200.

I want to be able to use it travelling on planes, driving and walking around, and the PM3 looks a great headphone (though the soundstage is a little narrow for classical).

I currently have Etymotic EPT4 and Fiio X3.

Is this a good move or should i keep the X3 and invest in a HiFi M8 or something similar instead.

All recommendations are very welcome!

Why not buy the PM3 first and see how you like them off your X3? AK makes awesome DAPs, I'm just thinking you might think the PM3 + X3 sounds darn good too.

As a side note, I suspect you might find the ER4P will still be the best bet on an airplane. For me, the great isolation of the Ety would overrule any improvement in soundstage you might get from full-size headphones. But that's just me - I can't stand the droning noise of airplanes - that might be because I spend a fair amount of time in them...

Hey Billybob

Yeah, good point i may do just that unless the opinion here is to spend more on cans and less on a DAP.

The Etys do give good isolation but id be prepared to give a little of it up TBH.

Should i go for a better quality headphone with the cash or is a portable amp a better investment (or maybe a holiday)!

In your stead I'm certain I'd rather buy pm-1 and keep the x3 than pm-3 and the A&K
I think better quality headphones is the best investment

I had actually considered the PM2 but they are pretty open and i was advised that they wouldnt be a good bet for travel (planes trains etc).

There aren't many phones that are good for traveling at the higher price end.

Yeah, it does seem limited.

I guess its this, the Beyer 660, AKG K545, NAD VISO HP50, the AT M70x or Momentums and thats about it!

Some like the ultrasone signature pro and it seems fairly portable

Ha, i cant believe i missed these. A bit more expensive but the review are fantastic. They are actually cheaper in Ireland than the US which is a bonus. However i wont get to try them out.

They do seem portable and sounds like they have good soundstage which will work well with classical.

Decisions decisions............

You are most welcome, though I think the advice was rather limited on this one.

Keep the X3 and get the PM-3. If your wallet is burning a hole in it, get the A&K. Its not a big huge improvement as the price would suggest, but the PM-3 is the best closed on ear anywhere near its price.

Not sure why people are recommending open cans for air travel lol.

Hey Davidsh

You put me onto the Ultrasones so thanks for that and ive had loads of PMS from people who owned both the PM3 and the Ultrasones. This is a great community and i really appreciate all the help.
