Portable Player Which Has a Good Recording Capability?

if you can live with a screen that does not have backlight, the sony rh910 is a very good deal for a hi-md player. the sound quality is superb and it is a full-fledged recorder and player. get it if you can.

It's a bit pricey, so I'm not sure whether I can convince her to get this one.

PS: Don't really like the most expensive one though (DH10P), the one with camera. I think it's too gimmicky. If I wanted a camera, I'd get a camera, not an MD.

By the way that's the wrong pic of the RH10, the real one has a OLED screen.

The MZ-NH1 also looks good. But I think they're the 1st generation of HiMD? I don't know whether they're "behind" the current gen. though..
I wonder what's the difference...

One thing,

Why I read that some users complained that they couldn't burn what they recorded from the MD into a CD?

So whatever recording that is done by MD, will only stay in the MD disc and can't be transferred at all ? That's weird...

This guy here did an excellent review of NH1, I wonder whether the recording quality is the same as in RH10?

I think the NH1 are much harder to find right now, not cheap either.

I almost wanted to buy the RH910, but then noticed that there was no line out. Some people are reporting the headphone out to be just as good if you turn up the volume. I also love the metal casing of the NH1 compared to the plastic RH910.

I think it will be either one of these:

MZ-RH10

MZ-EH930

MZ-NH1

I really don't know much about minidisc, so sometimes when I read the reviews, I don't really get what they mean.
Anyone kind enough to tell me the differences between those 3, especially in regards to voice recording (eg. lectures). ? What I know is NH1 has the time&date stamp feature, which is very useful for recording lectures.

Thanks.

Cross off the EH930. It is a player only unit so you can't record with it.

Go to Minidisc.org, click on BROWSER near the top and click on any Hi-MD unit you want to learn about. Search on the forum for peoples experiences/reviews of a particular unit.

Eh ? You sure ? I thought it only doesn't play MP3, but can record.

That's pretty expensive for a play-only MD...

EDIT: Ya, just confirmed it's a play only. That leaves me to one choice only then, since the other one is a 1st gen. it will be hard to get in Japan.

EDIT 2: Just read the minidisc forum... the more I read, the more confused and indecisive I am... they have their own advantages over each other. But according to what I read, the NH1 wins in terms of sound quality and it has metal body. Sound quality is important to me.
But the problem is, where the heck can I still get them ?

Amazon .co.UK still have them.

The RH10 supports MP3, the NH1 has to transcode them to ATRAC
The NH1 has hardly any info on the unit itself. Its all on the remote. Nice metal body.

Consider the NH900 basically the same as the NH1 except cheaper body, less fancy remote, but it can take an addon AA battery so it has much longer battery life.

However Sonic stage still has some problems with transferring recordings from MD to the PC. So expect some awkwardness there. If you try to transfer a recoring and it fails. Then try a 2nd time the recording is lost. Once the transfer fails your only option is to record it via line in in analog. Some people are saying Sonic Stage 3.1 is much stable.

A MP3 player that records is much more convient.

the only thing that keeps me from buying a hi-md recorder is the fact that i am mac based.

so, since he seems to have had is question answered...anyone know a good portable with line in that is friendly with mac?

i know i could record line in from the himd into my comp..but really...real time transfer from a digital source? gah.

Update. My partner doesn't wanna spend 30,000 yen for something that she uses only for recording.

So maybe I should write off the HiMD then... damn...
Anything around 10,000 yen (or a bit more) price range that is pretty good at recording?

But I will try to convince her to get the HiMD. As a member of head-fi, I feel obliged to convince someone to blow their budget on audio-related stuff.

Update.

MZ-NH1 it is.

Heh, finally convinced her to get that one.
Have to sacrifice not getting anything else for myself to get this one for her recording purpose (and I'll be using it too once in awhile, although I'm not really fussy on portables)
I forgot to tell her which microphones to get. I hope she doesn't get crappy mics. (is there such thing as crappy sounding mics from Sony?)

I actually decided on this one over the newest HiMD (RH10). Please tell me I made the right decision...

You made the right decision.

If you want to look into mics try looking here. They provide some good info.

If you don't mind me asking where were you able to find a NH1 and do they ship to the US?

Yami,

My partner is going to get it from Japan. I think it's around 25,000 yen, it's a good price I think. Although she has too travel quite a distance to get it.
Thanks for the link for the microphones, but I think I was a bit too late in asking that. I tried to call Japan just now to let her know about the mic., but looks like she is already off to the shop. So I can just hope she will meet a knowledgeable shopkeeper there.

About shipping to US, as far as I know, japanese online shops don't ship overseas... I might be wrong though.
But I think Amazon Japan (or any other amazon) has it, but maybe it's a bit expensive...
