I have been looking at a portable DVD players just to have one for travelling or what-not. While researching players on the internet, it hit me that for $100-150 you can get a feature-packed player. It plays DVD/-+R/RW, CD CD-R/RW, you can view pictures, some have mp3 playback capabilities, and (one of the more important features for audio applications) most have an audio line at as well as a digital ouput of some kind. Let's not forget the 7" LCD screen.

I wondered if anyone here has ever used a portable DVD player as a source? How do they compare to a PCDP?

I've used one and liked the sound, especially connected to the Headroom Micro stack via an optical cable. Using the regular line out, it wasn't as good as my Aiwa XP-33 pcdp, but I did like it better than the Sony D-11 that I have.

I've been using the Panasonic DVD-LA95 and DVD-LX9 for some time. They are much better than the PCDP players I have tried but my experience with PCDP is not great enough to generalize the experience.
