Has anyone here heard the Marantz 1090? It has a really fat, bassy, tubey sound (it's not a tube amp though). I'm looking for something portable that sounds just like it.

Any recommendations?

Have you considered just turning on the "treble reducer" EQ on your iPod?

(There is no such thing as tube sound).

Of course. That doesn't do it.

BTW - The "Tubey" sound (or whatever you want to call it -- it exists I've been hearing it for years in the guitar amp world) isn't just a simple EQ change. It's a kind of coloration to the signal that you typically get using tube amps -- smooth fat sound with rolled off treble and rounded bass. Not all tube amps create this sound (Little Dot for instance doesn't) and as I mentioned my solid-state Marantz creates it. You certainly aren't going to get it just changing the EQ on your iPod -- especially since iPods don't sound "fat" at all compared to say a Cowon.
