i don't think so
maybe many portable player sounds loud enough, but not drive the ear phone play well enough.

FWIW, my IHP140-Sensa combo sounds quite a bit better without my GoVibe. I guess its the good headphones "fault". Maybe the SD will work better in this combo.

You're not the first person to comment on the surprising lack of sound quality out of the iHP1XX with an amp. Do you use the amp with the headphone jack or a line out?

From my experience, the line-out on the iHP-120 sounds worse than the headphone-out.

I can confirm that also on the PCDPs of iRiver, the line out of the iMP-400 sounds worse than the headphone out, and i can hear that with my Sennheiser´s PMX-60 or the MX300 , so probably with good headphones it will be even worse.

See you

I'm not sure I totally agree with that but it's an interesting justification. :

Hmm....we must have gone to different maths schools....

5 years

52 weeks in a year.

3 sessions per week

amp costs $400

5 X 52 = 260 (260 weeks)

3 sessions per week = 260 X 3 = 780 (total sessions)

400 divided by 780 = 0.51

Therefore each 4 hour session actually costs you 51 cents plus batteries.

(your calculation showed you what it would cost you per week to pay for the amp..

Where's my calculator?

Let's see, what did I do?

3 days times 4 hours = 12 hours/week

12 hours x 52 weeks = 624 hours per year of listening time

624 hours x 5 years = 3120 hours of listening over 5 years

Here's my mistake:

3120 hours/$400 = 7.8

But it should have been cost/hour or 400/3120 = .1282

But that is cost per hour not listening session

So .1282 x 4 = .5128

I stand corrected. That will teach me to check my work. Whatever credibility I had in these forums is now lost.

Thanks ipodstudio.

Anyway, the point remains the same. If you break it down into how much listening you get out of the amp, you very well may think it worth it.

With what amp?

I've pretty much decided against a portable amp. I prefer the portability aspect when listening on the go. I decided to spend some more money for a stationary amp, for when I really have the time and the concentration to critically listen and fully enjoy my music.

For my ears there is not much of a difference. With lesser phone and amp, I like the line out more.

i have found that when i use the headphone jack, there is a funky rolloff of signal when the volume goes down, like the signal for each side is incrementally being released. so it's like you aren't getting the clean complete signal until you hit full volume at which point the signal is fully out there but so is the volume, either busting your ears or just getting plain distortion.

but with a line out, you bypass all that headphone volume circuitry, so you have the clean signal, coming at you at one volume level. if you want to raise or lower that volume, use an amp - but the signal itself won't degrade or improve once it leaves the source's line out, and it's now up to the quality of your amp to carry that signal to your ears at the volume you want with the signal you want.

LOL! OK, don't tell anyone (wouldn't want to ruin my credibility, too..
