I am new to all of this and am getting a little overwhelmed. Looking for portable amp to go between my I Audio 5X and HD600, I listen to jazz/rock, and my price range is under 200$. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Ed

Hi,

I recommend the XTRA (see the "mystery amp" thread) even though I haven't received mine yet.

Another great amp for the HD6x0 is the Xenos 0HA-REP when customised with AD823 + LMH6654 (you have to ask for it directly to alberto of Xenos Audio, will cost you $122 plus shipping).

I have been looking through this site for over a week now. Searching and reading until I can’t take it any more. Went through the portable amp compilation and saw lots of options. But what I have not found is anyone saying that they like this amp with the HD600. Best I can figure some amps sound better with some cans than others. Seems like many people have a few pair of cans and talk about how they work with a given amp. From what I understand the HD600 take a lot of power to run them properly and so far I have not had that power. My guess is that some of the less expensive portable amps may not have enough kick to properly drive the HD600 properly and may not be a significant improvement. This site has already been very helpful and I would like to thank all of you for that. Any more first hand experience and advice would be great, Ed

I see people talking about amps they use with the HD650's. Is it safe to assume that amp would work well with the 600's?

I haven't had my HD 600s very long but they sound quite good with a Ray Samuels SR-71.

Yes.

One word: Hornet. Just got mine a few days ago and it appears to work very well with HD595 and HD600. Best of my amps with HD595 and also with E500s (super low noise).

Headroom Bithead works well with HD600s and HD595s, too. Little different implementation and form factor, DAC onboard and AAA battery use, plus two headphone jacks.

Yes the HD600 sounds very good when paired withe the SR71. The Hornet "M" also drives the HD600 very nicely and since I listen at much lower volumes than Vorlon1 the Supermicro IV is a very nice amp as well.

Miguel's post got me to listen to the HD 600 out of the Supermicro. Shocklingly good. Excellent 3 dimensional soundstage and the highs are really open, clear and sweet, yet still, of course, within the Senn sound signature. Also, the micro will drive the HD 600s to play loud and they do not clip. There is real good synergy here.
