I'm about to get the Audio Technica a700s and am curious why the ad700 has velour pads while the a700 has pleather. The velour looks to be so much more comfortable.

Is the pleather as comfortable as the velour?

Is there any way to change the pads on the a700 from pleather to velour? I need the headphones to be closed, so switching to the ad700s isn't an option.

My guess would be it's used to get a better bass response out of it, or maybe because it's cheaper. A900 uses pleather too, so my guess would be bass. I would love to get leather pad on my A900...

To get better bass response as Faust2D has mentioned seems to be the reason for the pleather pads on the A700s. I own the a pair of A700s and find that the pleather pads to be very comfortable. The only problem I have the the A700 pleather pads is that they tend to peel and flake after a while. Some listeners who's ears get exteremely warm or sweaty during the warmer months may find the pleather pads to be uncomfortable. I don't have this problem. Yes you can adapt the AD700 pads to the A700 or you can adapt the W1000, W5000 and A1000 leather pads to the A700.

Yes I realize I could do a search for this question...

Is there a walk through on how to do the earpad replacement, and does anyone have any pictures/reviews on any changes brought about by changing to the A1000 or W5000 pads?

I would also like to know how to switch the pleather pads on the A900 to leather pads. The pleather pads seem to be stuck on pretty well and I'm not sure how to take them off.

The earpads, like 99.995% of all earpads, are held on by a collar that fits around a flange on the earcup.

If you pull on the edge of the earpad where the collar wraps around the flange, you can pull the collar out of the flange.

Once you've pulled a little bit out of the flange, you can basically peel the earpads off.

Beware that Audio-Technica pleathers are the same quality as you get on $20 Koss headphones, so be careful not to tear the collar off the earpads if you think you might put them back on again.
