Hi there,

I thought that instead of downloading yet another Phish show from gdlive (shn), I could start with some Grateful Dead stuff.

I don't have anything yet from GD; so what would you recommend for a first taste (what year, recent or old, or even a specific show).
Here is the current selection: ftp://gdlive.com/shn/ .

Thanks in advance,
P.

I have loads of SHN boots (not dead or phish) but the sound quality of official releases can be worth spending some money IMO. I only say this because the Dead have so many official live releases. These have all been recently remastered and in HDCD. 'Dick's Picks' seem to be the latest new dimension to the gigantic live dead world. I like the look of the most recent release $28 for the 4 cd box set 'Closing of Winterland' http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=music

I've lost touch with the dead/hippie music but these guys lists at amazon seem to know what they're talking about.

I'd say go with veneta (8.27.72) or a 77 show..may '77..5.8.77 perhaps...or 5.9..don't matter really.....the great thing 'bout the GD is the variety...'72 is infinitely different from '77 as is '74 n' '72 (to a lesser extent of course) etc etc...

you could always email me if you wna get in deeper...

OHH..and if i wer you I'd seek out some GD-live-releases.....I'd say Dicks Picks Volume 18 ('78 features a very accessable GD-sound in my opinion)..for the more exploratory stuff that is available in stores go for STEPPIN' OUT/HUNDREDYEARHALL....and they are also rumoured to release 4.24.72 which is the night b4 the show on 100yearhall - it's supposed to be a monster this one! Personally, I can't wait!!!

Cheers,
Sid

I think the official releases are worth the money. Checkout Nightfall of Diamonds 10-16-89 (2nd Dark Star after haitus) and Go to Nassau. I like the new Europe (Stepping Out) cd, though it is not a full show, just picks from the Europe '72 tour that have not been released in HDCD yet. It is 4 cds, and they are very worthy.

I think hundert year hall is poor quality. I just can't stand to listen to it anymore, but it does have a really good set.

Dylan and the dead, best concert ever!!!!

Seriously, i'd look for the early-mid 70's stuff, but i really can't reccomend any spefic bootlegs/releases

Sidmmm gave some great recommendations.

Look for 5.8.1977 Ithaca, NY-this is a soundboard recording of good quality. 5.9.1977 (Buffalo, NY I think?) is probably just as good. The 1977 and 1978 shows are the best place to start IMO. The December 78 Winterland shows are also choice.

Dick's Pick's are great and have really nice sound quality. My pick is Volume 10 (12.26-27.1977). Another favorite of mine is Two from the Vault, which is an August 1968 show.
