Please list some well-mastered CDs

@ TKO

Picked up Def Leppard today, and I am enjoying the music and the quality immensely. Definitely not a HOT mastering job. Thank goodness!

Thanks for the tip. When I listen to stuff that is done at a reasonable volume, it makes me even LESS tolerant of hotly mastered CDs.

I haven't spent any time listening to RLJ, but I have heard some of her stuff before - when I was a kid.

I will have to order online, since I went to the local Best Buy and didn't have any luck.

As mentioned on another thread, Paul Simon's Graceland is one of the best mastered / engineered recordings ever. Even it's not normally your thing, play it through some good headphones and you'll wonder why all recordings can't be done like this.

The original cd? there is a remaster isn't there? My uncle had this when I was a kid so I think even though it isn't my thing it will bring back some memories

If you think that album is good, you need to go right to the source and get this new one:

http://www.headsup.com/albums/3109.asp

It's from Lady Blacksmith Mambazo's "Long Walk to Freedom". They are the group from Africa that sang backup on "Graceland (Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes)" and they have multiple guests joining them in a recording that is second to none.
It is a hybrid so if someone decides to upgrade to SACD they're in for a treat.

I'm not sure if it's considered "mastered", but I do like Kitaro's albums, particularity "Ancient Journey" and "Silk Road". Very unique effects (at least back then when Silk Road was released), and allowed me to realize soundstage potential on my E500's when moving from Mx440 / Vibe

You could do worse than check out some of my favourites.

Yello - Baby (especially 'Capri Calling')

The KLF - The White Room & Chill Out

Jennifer Warnes - The Hunter (musically not as good as 'Blue Raincoat' but check out the bass on the apropriately named 'Way Down Deep')

Little Death Orchestra - Little Death (a benchmark for me)

Christy Moore - Smoke & Strong Whiskey

Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life

Massive Attack - Mezzanine & Protection

Amelie (soundtrack) - Yann Thiersen

Amarok - Mike Oldfield

I'm not an expert but these are ones I use to 'define' the sound of any given component.

Good luck.

Zorrofox,

I have this CD and can agree to its quality of engineering. Ms. Warnes knows what she wants to sound like. Another fantastic recording of hers.

Cheers.

Really? That always sounds a little cold and bass-shy to me. ( I still love it.)

I second the Rickie Lee Jones.

Also, you might want to try Jackson Browne's The Naked Ride Home (don't base the whole album on the first track!)

I see quite a few cd's that are labeled anniversary edition remaster DigiPak.
Are these anygood or is it that some may be good and some not?

For instance my original Pink Floyd the wall cd was stolen way back in the first year it came out. At the moment i have a few select songs from it. I came across it on sale 2 days ago and it was the Anniversary remaster DigiPak.
I had it in my hand but recall reading that it was not a good remaster so i put it back.

Should i just find a used copy of this?

Still the main question is wether any of these " remastered DigiPak " any good.

Another good one I like is 'Out Of The Cradle' by Lindsey Buckingham. You know, the real talent in Fleetwood Mac? The production is so punchy, not exactly natural but dynamic and alive(?).

I'm not very good at describing what I hear sometimes.

The Trinity Session from th Cowboy Junkies is a very nicelt recorded and engineered album. You can feel the presence of the building (a church) where this album was recorded. Very nice songwriting also.

Patricia Barber , a great pianist and jass vocalist, has many great albums. The Live a Fortnight in Paris album is great: very strong, well defined bass and beautifully miked piano and voice.

"A Fortenight in France" is the best album I've heard in the past 2 years, and I normally hate live LP's. It was recorded entirely in DSD.
