Hi, 1st post here, definitely a noob. Having a bit of trouble finding what I want, I'd appreciate any advice!
I want a set of headphones that can keep the distraction of traffic or the TV out, that's a priority. They can be circumaural - don't mind if they're big.
I'd prefer them to be easy to drive. At home I will use them with an Asus Xonar soundcard, but I will also use them with my smartphone and it's weak output. I'm sure I should be getting 2 different sets but I can't afford that right now.
As for the kind of sound I want, well I currently have Sennheiser PX100's, and I'm really happy with them. The only reasonable criticism I could make is that the bass is a tad strong - lovely though it is. And of course they let all the ambient noise in.
The closest thing to high-end headphones I've owned were Grado SR60's and I loved them - the clarity and detail were stunning to me. They were a bit weak in the bass though, and they did fall apart eventually.
I think my ideal sound would be something like a hybrid of those two, but they're both very open and obviously I need something as closed as possible so that could be tricky.
It would also be nice to have a bigger soundstage with accurate positioning, partly for surround sound gaming as per the Mad Lust Envy guide - but again that might be asking a lot from closed headphones.
I've made a nuisance of myself trying a bunch at local hifi shops and struggled to find anything satisfying - quite distressing really as I'd plug a pair in thinking 'these should be awesome - seen good reviews of these!' and I found them weak or muddy or sibilant or had unnatural 'lumps' in the spectrum etc. Some of that might be due to their being plugged into a Samsung Galaxy S2 of course, but it's obvious you can't go on reviews alone.
Surprisingly the closest thing I found so far were cheap Sennheiser HD202's, but I expect I can find better than that, most of the models I've seen recommended online weren't available to try.
I realise asking for all this for less than £100 might be a bit of a challenge!
Examples of stuff on my SDcard right now (I try to stick to 320kbps MP3) - Florence & the Machine, Led Zeppelin, Knife Party, The Shins, LaRoux, Baka Beyond, Sasha, The Levellers, Hallucinogen, Silversun Pickups, Electric Six.
I don't listen to a lot of classical and not really into blues, jazz, country, hiphop, R&B or metal
