I want to spend about $200 or less on phones. I listen to rock, dave matthews, and some 80s. I have had HD280 + CHA 47 and was pretty happy. Hovewer sometimes the HD280s were just very uninteresting with sound reproduction (usually in rock songs). I'm considering the grado SR225/SR325 and HD 580. Currently I have no amplifier and i think i might get an ipod. I want a headphone that is somewhat portable but also very comfortable like HD280. My one complaint about HD280 is they were just a little too big to travel with. Is grado what i'm looking for, are they very energetic. How does 225 compare to 325? Probably won't be using any amp for now. I have an M audio revolution at the moment.

Thanks!

If you think the Senns you have are too uninvolving for rock I wouldn't get the HD580, especially without an amp - it'll be even worse (if you don't like that kind of sound, that is). From what other people say, the SR225 represents better value/sound ratio than the 325 - perhaps someone who knows more about it can chip in?

I think the HD 25 is pretty good for rock. Although it doesn't quite match the performance of a Grado 225, both headphones share a similar sound signature. Moreoever, the hd 25 is very transportable (smaller than the hd 280) and easy to drive without an amp. I also find the Hd 25 to be more comfortable than the grados.
For sound quality only I'd go for the Grados.

for your musical tastes I would say go for the grado's or one of the groovalizers [akg k240s, beyerdynamics dt531]

NOTE: I have not heard the dt531's

From what I've read the SR-325 is so bright it only sounds good with heavy metal rock, while the SR-225 is one of the best cans for all rock in general. The MS2 is more neutral and less fun than the SR's but that makes it a better all-around can.

Sennheiser 595 is VERY good for rock and 80's music. Hell, these cans are good for anyting

Actually just listening some 80's music...unbeleivable sweet sound...these cans are just starting to "loosen up", been braking them two days...wow!

Oh, just to add, 595 NEEDS an amp, i tried just for fun run these without, and sound was lot quieter and thin.

I see well it looks like SR225 are for me, b/c i listen to all types of rock with heavy metal being least probably. So long

P.S. is there any improvment of the button covering the drivers is removed?
