Hello friends!  I am writing this post to gather some information about upgrading my sound system in my computer.

For about 12 years now, I have been stuck on a Creative sound blaster audigy 2 card paired with logitech z-5300 speakers.  I have never had a problem with the setup until yesterday when my sound card died.

Therefore, now I am planning on redoing my computer audio experience.

I am tired of 5.1 systems and would prefer a better 2.0/2.1 system as after living with my logitech z-5300 speakers for 12 years I just hate having to deal with those 2 rear speakers and center channel.

I plan to purchase a 2.0 active speaker system such as the audio engine a2+ or a5+.  Or something like the monoprice active monitors.  I will be using them with my audio technica ATH-A900x headphones.

Currently, I know USB DAC/AMPS are all the talk of the town, but I am a bit confused on how they work.

So say i get the audio engine a5+.  How would i get these to work together with my audio technica a900x's?   Almost all the headphone amp / DACS I have seen only offer 1 output.  Considering I do get the USB DAC / AMP, would that mean I have to unplug my speaker line from the amp everytime i want to use my headphone, then plug my headphone line in?   Seems kind of tedious to me.  Is there a system where I can keep everything plugged in and control it from my desktop or just press a button to switch it?  And also how easy would it be to add a sub to a 2.0 speaker setup?

Would a sound card be more up my alley?  But then in order to plug my stuff into the sound card, i would need adapters for this and that.  I have heard that those type of things degrade sound quality.

Is there really much difference to say a schiit magni + modi combo vs a sound blaster Z card?

I listen mostly to music at the computer.  All kinds of music.  But i do like emphasis on tight bass.  I dont care for bass like beats produce.  I like punchy tight bass when it comes to music.  I also watch movies but dont care for directional sound at all.  I do play a few games but again, i do not care for positional audio at all.

I also do not have the need to listen to music at deafening volumes.  I rarely ever turn my speakers up louder than 40% volume.  Headphones is a different story.

Basically what I am looking for is a 2.0/2.1 system that can function well with my headphones that I dont need to be unplugging this and that.  Sound quality is very important to me , especially tight bass as i said earlier.

Sorry for the long read, i kind of just went off on a few things.  Your replies are greatly appreciated!

Just making sure, are these the earpads?  http://head-direct.com/Products/?act=detail&id=117

While the dac/amp is nice, I really dont prefer buying anything from china.  Solely because of current overseas shipping situations.  Ive personally waited over 6 weeks for a recent package from china and it came super damaged.  Not the first time it has occurred.

I do think I will buy the monoprice monitors. The price seems right on those.

Right now im leaning towards a dac / amp, would you suggest the audioengine d1?  I saw it has both headphone outs as well as rca outs for speakers.

The Audioengine D1 is a good choice since it automatically shuts off the speakers when you plug in headphones (I believe).

However, I also want to recommend the Audinst HUD-mx1 / mx2. I ordered it on a Tuesday, got it on Friday 3 days later. They are also having a 15% off sale right now. For me, this was the better option between the D1 and the 15.32. It actually has a manual switch to change from speakers to headphones so you can leave your headphones plugged in 24/7. which sounds like a big advantage for you. The Audio--gd 15.32 can also do this, but I wasn't terribly impressed with both their website and their ordering process, I couldn't even understand how to order something!
