I decided to borrow my brother's Apple iPOD (1st generation 10GB Windows PC model) and I'm playing back some MP3s which he must have downloaded off from KaZaa. The sound quality is not all that bad at all! It is fun, kind of punchy, and pretty fast. Of course, it pales in comparison to my Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi but for something that fits easily in one hand and can hold a few thousand songs I am pleasantly pleased! The OS is intuitive and skipping songs on the fly is well...fly! The only quibbles I have with it are the standard list of complaints: bass extension and slam are lacking, middle range is compressed and lacks texture / dimension, treble is rolled off while the soundstage is all within your head. My earphones include the ER-4P/S and UE-10 Pro. I do not currently own a portable headphone amplifier nor an RCA -> MINI IC whatsoever. It's not so bad...really!

Your right its not so bad at all. And with a high quality AAC rip (I use 225 rock, 320 Classical) its got quite a bit of sparkle.

I test drove a 3rd Generation Ipod and it was like chalk and cheese with my old MuVo NX flash player... the etymotics really started to show their stuff. Not quite up to the sound of my Denon CDp at home but heck, no way I'm taking that into work.

So look out... once you try it, a purchase is immenent!

Cheers,

Have you listened to the Rio Karma yet? The SNR of that DAP is 96dB, very nice. The UI is also very nice, and it supports FLAC, Ogg, mp3, wma, and wav. It also has a 15 hour battery life.

Wait, you bought a set of the UE-10's already? Last I recall reading (back on 2-29-04) you were saving up for them. Have you posted a review of them yet?

Care to elaborate on that? Do you own the UE-10's or not?

As of yet, no. However, FedEx is supposed to deliver mine in the next 90 minutes or less. That's all I can say right now.

Oh, ok. I hope I didn't just jinx you. I am curious why you mentioned the UE-10's in your original post if you don't actually have them yet. Your original post makes it sound like you auditioned an iPod with both your Ety's and your UE-10's.

At any rate, please do post your impressions on them after you've had some listening time.

I have nothing but good things to say about my 15GB iPod. The it's stylish & nicely built, sound quality is great, holds lots of songs, iTunes works great for PC's. It does what it does very well.

I do not understand why people insist on loving the mini. Yes, it is incredibly tiny, but its such a bad deal. For all of $50 more than you pay for the mini you get 11 more GB (the 15 gig iPod). And yea, the mini is quite a bit smaller, but its not like the iPod is a tank or something...
