I have a Playstation 3, and an E09k desktop amp connected to HD650s. Is it worth it getting a converter box to convert the optical out into a $100 1 foot long analog RCA out into my E09K amp? I also have a Fiio E18 if that helps at all.

I don't know if this is a question that can easily be answered. There are people willing to spend thousands of dollars for differences that are imperceptible to everyone except the vendor and the buyers. I wouldn't do it - but I'm a tin-eared, cheap b@stard.

Few days ago I swapped the DAC connected to the optical of my ps3 from a cheap crappy fiio d3 to a really old vintage (stereo only) dac and it was a huge improvement in my book and I pretty much only use the ps3 as a BR player/Hulu Streamer in my bedroom.  Sadly I should game more but I do not.  I probably could do better but don't want to spend any more.  Up to you in terms of "value".  The PS3 is probably a crappy source to be honest.
