This has been mentioned quite a few times here and is quite old news. Here are just a few threads (I used the search tool to find them):

I highly doubt the PS1 is better than real high-end source, or mid-fi sources. I believe it's just supposed to be a relatively adequate, budget source (compared to everything else out there).

There's about 140 pages on the Playstation 1 as redbook source, including some very serious mods at diyaudio, everything from a couple of quick solder points for wires and a 12 inch inner tube underneath for vibration to full metal case fabrications for top loading cdps, if I remember correctly.

Any gamer knows that PS1 has a horrible, unreliable optical drive. Your money is better invested elsewhere, imho.

the new issue of stereophile even goes after this rumor. shame on you, shame on us for even attempting to extend the life of this audiophiel equivalent of a silly urban legend... but I guess that's where the net excels

I use PS1 exclusively as a CDP in my system, which is $10K+ MSRP-wise. The key is in system matching. You need to at least use great, warmish interconnects. I use Cardas Quadlinks, which you can pick up used for a bit less than $100. The sound is just phenomenal, opens up the bass & soundstage of the PS1 so much. The PS1 sounds so good in my system that I had no use for Cambridge Audio 840C anymore (although I miss its DAC capabilities.) I think most $6K players will sound better than PS1, though, but a vast # of players under that price - which I've heard - do not sound as fluid & analog-warm as the PS1. There are few players I'd take over the PS1, such as Primare CD31, Bluenote Stibbert or some non-upsampling models from Consonance, but these cost many times over the PS1. PS1 is the real deal.

Apparently, the Germans have this PS1 thing figured out & are pretty crazy about modding up the PS1. Check out this crazy tubestage for the PS1! Anyone read German?

I owned a PS1 briefly which I bought as an experiment for £10. Frankly it was as good as my Marantz CD player but the interface was almost impossible without a monitor so it had to go. Obviously I could not say whether it could compete with a really high end CD player but it was pretty good especially at that price.
