We are 12 this year! In East Asian astrology, 12 years also signifies completing one zodiac cycle and is also a time for self-renewal, reflection and growth. So let’s look back at our past achievements and the philosophies that shape and define us. These are values we want to keep (and amplify!) going forward. Crossroads represent new beginnings, new dimensions, and new opportunities. It is a chance for us to explore new directions and try new things. To boldly go where we have not gone before.

What is the X?

At Effect Audio, we believe the X is for Sustainability.

The X is all about doing the necessary for the longevity of this planet. “Sustainability” is not just about using smart designs, materials and ideas to take on today’s challenges. But also about anticipating tomorrow’s demands in this ever-changing world.

Just what is the X?

Over the past three weeks (and in more weeks to come), we have been releasing a series of images across our social media channels, each corresponding to a theme that helps us shape up our new identity and mysterious pet project, the X. Some of the lucky few amongst you might have even seen or tried the early fruits of our labour in Hong Kong recently.

The X is for “Audiophile”

This week, we focus on the theme of what it means to be an “audiophile” at Effect Audio.

Before the Centurion and the X, we regrettably didn’t have many opportunities to discuss this aspect about us at length, despite its deeply rooted nature in our DNA.

Beginning with the most obvious, being an audiophile is to put the sound first and foremost in all our designs. For us, the raison d'être for an audio product shouldn’t just be about simply bringing a sonic message across various mediums; but it should also do it with clarity, confidence, truthfulness and without distortion. You can see evidence of this philosophy in all our products from the early days up till our newest releases, flagship or otherwise.

In the same manner, we have crafted the X to be something very special, seeking to marry reference signatures with the myriad of colours available on the audiophile palette.

Special Products for a Very Special Group of Customers

The audiophile customer is a very rare and special breed of customer. Audiophiles are never simply satisfied with just “good” or “excellent”. They know that the highly intangible medium of sound can easily be shaped through the laws of physics and very tangible means, and audiophiles love that in spades.

Excellence, in audiophile parlance, is often just a baseline for something else greater; regardless of whether this has to do with the experience of interacting with a single component, the visual design language of a cable or the voicing of a pair of headphones.

Excellence is everywhere, and in the world of the audiophile, it meets at the perfectly and delicately balanced juxtaposition of function and form. In other words, audiophile products not only have to sound good and deliver their absolute best, but also need to feel and look good while doing it. The X is no different in this aspect, incorporating sonic and visual elements from the East, coupled with the wisdom and practicality of the West.

Technical Excellence

Delivering such a total package is not easy. The end result often seems simple but requires extreme degrees of technical excellence in doing so. Thankfully, audiophile customers can understand the lengths we have to go to in order to make this a reality. After all, the desire for technical excellence is often at the heart of every audiophile.

From dynamics to detail retrieval, soundstage to instrument separation, audiophiles want them all. Yet, high-end audio is a very personal thing. No self-respecting audiophile will be happy simply with everything and anything that comes out of any factory, ours included. That’s why it pleases us to say that the X will also incorporate ground-breaking user-tuneable features that will delight audiophiles everywhere.

Over the past four weeks, we have been dropping clues, each week corresponding to a theme that helps us shape up our new identity and mysterious pet project, the X. At Effect Audio, the X is the perfect blend of art, design, science and philosophy that we believe would not only be an expression for our brand, but also for the shape of audio to come.

The X is for “Versatility”

Last week, we have discussed what it means to be an “audiophile” at Effect Audio. This week, we look at another principal attribute of the X: Versatility.

In our books, a perfectly versatile audio product is like a chameleon. It’s a shapeshifter, blending in and disappearing into its surroundings; allowing its users to dictate the ways it should be used without the technology nor its inherent sonic signature getting in the way.

In other words, versatile products so transparent, they would bend to the will of their users regardless the nature of the ask. Whether it’s to put the art up front and centre, or enjoy perfect fidelity anywhere in the world, the X is always up to the challenge.

Why Versatility?

Of all the lengths we go to, why choose versatility, you ask? The reasons are three-fold.

The first part is simply because we have done it before. When we launched the ConX® system earlier this year, we knew this was more than an answer to the various standards and ways people can choose to connect their favourite devices together, sustainably.

The second part, and perhaps the most obvious, is that of the changing nature of the way sound is enjoyed and consumed currently. A zeitgeist of sorts. Gone are the hazy days where one could afford the time to sit down in front of large stacks of power-hungry equipment; with the lyrics to a gatefold vinyl album in one hand and a glass of one’s favourite drink in another. Letting time slowly slip away as one gets spirited away to another world.

The modern listener lives quickly, and they live lives larger than their forebears. The modern listener makes very bold statements about themselves everywhere they go.

Rigorous gym sessions in the morning, teleconferencing before lunch, a podcast or two in the afternoon, long runs in the park at sundown, a spot of music after dinner, games before bedtime. These are but some of the many ways the modern audiophile spends his or her day, with countless other permutations and possibilities everywhere else in the world.

The X needs to be able to present such content truthfully, and yet be flexible enough to be tuned to its user’s fancies. Therefore, we have worked in user-customisable features on the X to suit every imaginable need. And we are only just getting started.

Life: Unbounded

Being able meet the content demands of the modern audiophile is not enough, we wanted to create an experience and a timeless product that would scale well into the 21st century.

This is where the final part of being versatile comes in.

Because the X needs to cater to all the above demands and some, we believe the X should not just be restricted to the stuffy confines traditionally associated with audiophile listening. We have therefore chosen a very bold approach to designing the X.

Therefore, the X must be at home anywhere in the world: Be it in a gym, on stage in front of thousands, in the privacy of a listening chair, in a jamming studio with friends, at a mixing desk, at cafes, in the air, at sea, in the hands of a content professional or of someone discovering the joys of hearing high fidelity sound for the first time. The X must be always ready for its next mission, whatever it may be.

That is why the X will be a through and through analogue product. But where it differs from others in its class is its ability to scale, regardless of its use, with the exploding number of digital sources and user applications. It will bounce between the new and the old, the known and the unknown.

What this means for the modern audiophile is that there are no more boundaries, no more prior considerations or conceptions about synergies or usage contexts. With the X, we believe that we have redefined the concept of universality in audio products and sincerely hope it would be the model to emulate in many years to come.

The X is for “Experience”

Last week, we have discussed why the concept of “Versatility” is so important to the X. This week, we look at another principal attribute of the X: (User) Experience.

The concept of user experience design is both new and old at the same time. The term itself emerged only in 1995, when Don Norman, a famed cognitive psychologist and designer at Apple, coined the phrase to describe the scope of work that his team was undertaking at the now famous computer company. However, its roots can be traced back to antiquity, when the Greeks (specifically, Hippocrates) investigated ways to optimise a surgeon’s workplace through the science of ergonomics.

What is “Experience” in the Context of the X?

What, then, is “experience” in the context of Effect Audio and of the X?

For many others, what we have seen is that the X is like a mark on a treasure map. It is an endpoint, or a goal to reach. The be all, and end-all of things.

At Effect Audio, we don’t really see it that way. We think that finding this elusive treasure is really just the beginning of another adventure. A new genesis, albeit with more empowerment, so to speak.

A start to what, you ask. For some audiophiles, finding this X probably meant scouring the entire map first before getting there. In the context of audiophilia, this probably means running through the whole gamut of possible tone colours, equipment types, resolutions, various listening styles, exploring the fully portable and the fixed installation configurations and many other permutations in between. Through such an experience, the seasoned audiophile should have picked up quite a few gems along the way.

Where the X features in this new adventure then, is empowering the seasoned audiophile to discover and rediscover features from such treasures. Just like revisiting the islands once travelled to before, the seasoned audiophile can now revisit old content that he or she had previously loved, to fall in love again with what was once familiar and listen to them like it was their first encounter all over again. All because the X will be able to present such content in new ways not seen before.

For the lucky new audiophiles who had only just started their journey, the X would be the perfect platform from which to amplify the range of emotions experienced in this hobby. And rather than to experience this just in the proverbial ebb and flow, the X would deliver it like a rollercoaster ride. The rush of adrenaline brought by the myriad ways to use and experience the X would be a very exciting prospect for someone new to this game. We believe the X would be a new benchmark in creating experiences from such a class of product.

The Great Sonic Escape, Comfortably

A suitable vehicle for such an adventure requires a few universal attributes to be built into the X.

The first is the ability to sweep its listeners off their feet at every press of the “play” button. Rather than just restricting to romance or a love at first sight, the X needs to spirit listeners off to distant worlds and immerse its users in the created environments as intended by the artists. With physical travel being highly limited in an age of lockdowns, border closures and extended quarantines, being able to transcend space and time in this manner might be a good thing. In fact, if we were to really have a say in this, we would even offer it up as an excellent alternative method to self-care.

The second is that it needs to do this comfortably.

After all, what is the point of being able to experience such visceral levels of immersivity when the overall experience is short-lived? Therefore, in designing the X, we have incorporated, for the first time in our humble history, the science of ergonomics into its design. For obvious reasons, we can’t disclose the full details behind the application of this science right now. However, what we can say so far is that the science works. The result is less user fatigue over extended listening sessions and the ability for the presence of the X to completely disappear over the course of time.

What is the X for You?

In short, at Effect Audio, “user experience” is a journey. It is a journey of discovery, and the joys of rediscovering. For us, it is about riding that rollercoaster of emotions; and letting the sound of the X sweep you off to distant lands, immersing you in new worlds.

Last week, we have discussed why the concept of “Experience” is so important to the X. This week, we look at the last principal attribute of the X: Innovation.

What is “Innovation” in the Context of the X?

What, then, is “Innovation” in the context of Effect Audio and of the X?

What may surprise many people is that there is no one definitive way to describe what “innovation” really is. One key idea that has floated up is the idea of reinvention: the introduction of bold, new ideas to very established practices, markets, products and services. This could be something as simple as turning a bottle of ketchup upside down, moving from call-centres to online apps, removing physical buttons on a phone or flat-packing furniture.

For the X, this description of innovation resonates very well with us.

Within the world of audiophilia, we have seen many interesting innovations. CDs have given way to online streaming. Digitally-powered components are becoming smaller and more portable. Wireless stereo going mainstream. And so on.

What about analogue audio, though?

In the last 10, maybe 15 years, we have seen the birth and explosion of growth in many exciting transducers, especially in the realm of personal audio. Balanced armatures. Air Motion Transformers. Planar magnetic drives. Electrostatic designs. Pure beryllium films. And the list goes on.

These are all interesting particularly because of the different tonal colours each type of driver provides.

However, if only there are creative ways to transform the use cases of personal audio products too. You know, something less digital and more analogue.

Hmm…

Leveraging on Creativity, Finding New Ways to do Old Things

As it turns out, we have been innovating in rather exciting ways over the last few years; developing creative solutions that serve real world needs.

Products like the ConX, the AKA and our Ultrashort Adapters have helped audiophiles everywhere with ways to keep their familiar favourites going for a long time, without sacrificing the integrity of what they hear.

With the X, we have dug deeper into our creative reserves. Just so that we can find new and interesting ways to experience audio, a medium that is typically considered just a unidimensional medium of communication.

The result is game-changing. From the user manual to the way the X is going to be packaged, the X is going to be a revolution. We are absolutely delighted to bring to you a slew of creative ideas that we hope would take us deep into this decade and hopefully beyond.

In essence, by creatively reinventing ourselves, we hope to inspire a movement to reinvent audio. And with the X, we believe we are just only getting started.
