Yes. But for that price, I'd be looking at a Fluke instead, which will show "OL" when overloaded.

Also mono I have to disagree. I personally believe that unless you have output protection circuit, plugin and unplug the headphones AFTER turn-on and BEFORE turnoff. The minor short of the output circuit is nothing compared to the DC thumps of some of the common amp designs on these boards. Plus a few buffers are cheaper to replace than headphones. If they still thump when you plug / unplug them then there's got to be DC on the rails, nothing else would cause that thump.

The ER-4Ps appear to be OK, (they were never plugged into the circuit for more than 10-20 seconds for a few times). I'll definitely be more cautious in the future. I there any way to check for damage other than listening?

I still get a sharp-click/low-thump when I switch the amp on/off; however when I plug/unplug the phones there is no noise, only a barely audible short static sound when the plug is inserted). This would confirm your theory that it is better to plug in the phones after turning on the amp; however is the amount of surge really large enough to cause problems with the headphones?

Ouch! $235!! However your not just getting a meter, it also functions as an excellent weapon/club! (I'll keep looking for my old one, I must have left it next to my slide-rule).

It depends from heaphone to headphone. My B&O A8 earbuds were damamged with a smaller spike for a shorter duration, but my sennheisers took a short sharp 7v spike with no problem. Basically throw in a song with loads of bass and turn up. If you hear a rattle or a crack ...
