If you're only dealing with moving-magnet cartridges, go with a Cambridge Audio 540P phono pre-amp.  It's available for $100.00 or under brand-new.

Just for the record, Sherwood's RX-4109 stereo receiver comes with a phono input.  It's an excellent low-cost receiver that punches way above its weight and it retails for under $100.00.  I got mine for $60.00 brand-new on Black Friday 2008.

Appreciate the help. I really just need a preamp. I was actually reading a few reviews on that exact preamp you mentioned. All have good to say about it and its fair priced. So i think i'll go with that. Thanks for your help!

Yeah, sounds good.  I plan on getting one myself for my other system.

Cambridge Audio QC can be a bit iffy. I had to return my 640P twice due to a noisy power supply.

This is a good alternative - really amazing sound considering the $70 price...

I would second this fully. Just got one for my NAD turntable...sounds great! Cambridge doesn't make crap!
