Diff'rent folks, diff'rent strokes... the Phonaks have seriously fast attack speeds for the whole frequency spectrum, compared to "slow" dynamic drivers, and even some armatures. I would call that feature "kickin'"...

I definitely am a basshead, as you see from the phones in my signature (besides running a 500W Klipsch KSW12 in my office, and a 15" Rockford/Fosgate in the car) - and while the Phonaks certainly don't have a bass quantity like the UE11, Atrios, or similar, they do sound "fun" compared to somewhat anemic phones like Ety or q-Jays, or even K701. The Phonaks go down DEEP, deeper than many other armatures (and even some dynamic drivers). No midbass hump, but serious real bass. The quantity is not overly much compared to others, but it's certainly not lacking.

If you haven't read it yet, click on the review link in my sig, there's a little more written concerning what I think about their bass.

I did read that review, many many times. That's what made me come back to considering these after realizing I shouldn't spend $250+ on IE8s since I'm only 15 years old (which means I'm poor and much better 'phones are likely to come out in the future that are more worth the money).

And I don't really know how to word this question, but how is the decay?(with cymbals and such, you know what I'm talking about)

With the black filters they are not lacking in bass, and even a bit unbalanced in favor of bass...not a bad thing at all. I went through my collection of what I call Electronic last night which consists of 1200 Mic's, Vibrasphere , Shpongle , Ozric Tentacles, Massive Attack , Man with No Name, Juno Reactor, Infected Mushroom...to name a few.

I used iPod Classic into my XM5 with no features engaged.

The bass was all there! Deep and powerful enough to give me the experience approaching HD650..with lesser feeling of air being pushed. I can't imagine anyone wanting more bass than this.

The fact that treble detail and mids don't get sacrificed to accomplish this much bass has me very excited to sample many more HQ recordings that are on my list tonight.

I've read a few comments here about these being somewhat inefficient. I did try them from iPod Classic HP out and found myself maxing the volume often. This was very loud but not beyond what I like to listen at for short testing durations. Upgrading to LO into XM5 made a big difference and gave much better dynamic slam in bass output.

I did some experimenting with the 75 Ohm switch on the XM5. I found that the added impedance reduced midrange slightly and was a nice change for some recordings at high volume. Using the added impedance and +10 dBswitch gave a volume very close to no switches...still plenty of power left to go with XM5.

Glad to hear that about the HP out and the iPod (I mean since I thought it was my ears or DAPs). I also hooked up the LOD to the Touch and the NuForce amp (wish I had the Minibox here), and that really resolves any volume issues, while giving the Phonaks a nice added layer of sound quality. Seems when I am out and about, they are more needy in terms of an amp for volume, but when sitting around the house in relative quiet, not so much. Either way, now that I have stumbled into what has become for me the perfect sleeve solution (the small T100s), I am really, really happy with these phones. Great stuff, and at around $150 or less, a bargain too.

I know I'm sort of overdoing it with the questions, but I have one more thing I'm wondering about.

Will these effectively produce the "high" feeling you get when listening to music like M83? Basically, all that needs is excellent clarity across the spectrum (which these apparently have), punchy bass (I guess these are punchy?), and excellent soundstage that is as "out of your head" as possible (not sure about this).

YES! these are IT. These will be the butter on your bread, the icing on the cake, the death of your wallet.

OK, I think they have excellent clarity, punchy bass and perhaps excellent soundstage (for an IEM).

So now that I've hyped these to a near sickening level I hereby recommend that you purchase these value-busting IEMs ASAP.

Too bad I have to wait until my birthday at the end of February because I don't have enough for them.

I feel your pain. I was able to buy them only because I sold other gear...which I've done a lot of lately to buy all of my recent toys...iPod Classic,iPod Touch,XM5,T4,Yo-Tank case. I've been busy.

I'm not sure if you guys know this, but if you order from Phonak's site and enter the SAVE10 coupon code, it takes off another 10%, which makes the final cost of the non-mic version $125.10 shipped (free shipping!).

Please don't run out the supply, I need these to be in stock at the end of February!

Oh well, more for us *smiles widely as he reads "Try for 14 days with no obligation"*

14 days with no obligation? There's no risk! They're mine! I want my birthday to come already...

tstarn06: Any updates on the X10 comparison?

I finally got my Phonaks, and there better and smaller than I expected. Like most I prefer the black filters, seems to make the sound funner and less analytical. Best Highs I have heard than on any of my previous iems , nice tight bass but I wouldn't mind a little more, and detailed mids. Definitely worth every cent.

Just one question, do the phonaks sound better with with Shure olives, or the Comply tips?
