Ive been burning them in for about 20 hours now. They are very efficient @ 32 ohms impedance, and easily driven by my pana 410 pcdp.

Presentation................10/10
Gotta mention the retail box, more of a "cardboard display case" really. A nice touch is the included headphone stand... looks great hanging alongside the pana... minimalist chic

Build quality...................9/10
Look as if they'll go the miles...robust...no obvious weaknesses.

Comfort..........................9/10
Really comfy on my large head. Plenty of clearance around the ears. Groovy plush velvet padding..self adjusting system.

Overall Sound................8.5/10
Bass 9/10
Plenty of bass guitar and kickdrum ..deep and tight..visceral.

Midrange 8/10
Instruments and vocals in this range are reproduced accurately with perhaps a little colouration in the upper mids.

Treble 8/10 (almost)
A bit harsh on some recordings, some sibilance on crash cymbals and vocals...improving a little with burn in.

Soundstage 9/10
Broad, plenty of "air" around instruments. Really like how the vocals have moved "outside" my head.

Detail 8.5/10
Plenty of detail, a bright, transperant and dynamic sound..not fatiguing.

Value..........................9/10
The HP890 are a definite stepup from my ksc35, which in comparison sound grainy and lack definition and detail. I think the HP890 would probably be a match for many of the popular entry level cans. Here in Australia a V6 with comfy pads costs around $250 AUD...the HP890 only $110 AUD.

I predict a strong following in countries where these can be purchased around the U.S. $50 mark.

The HP890 are an open design.

That is definitely a good price for the 495s however as with most of the "online bargains" not an option for Australians.

I need to buy a pair of closed cans to use at work.
Will the Philips 890 sound beter than the Beyer Dt250-80?
They are nearly the same price here in UK (890-£70, Dt250-£80).
Should I change my mind (again...) and get the 890 rather than the dt250's?

Cheers

Howdy TK,

I ordered them in via West Coast Hifi.

Pluses...
Really enjoying the bass, expanded soundstage and detail of the 890s.
Comfortable and convenient ...no adjusting the buds or ear clips.
At 32 ohms theres no need for the extra expense of an amp.

Minuses...
The bright signature sound *might* induce fatigue for some people.
Sibilance, it varies in degrees with the recording from "not a problem" to "a bit annoying".

Uhm, actually I think the HP890 is better than the DT250/80. So if you want to go for the DT250, I'd recommend the 250-Ohm-version instead. And to me the DT250 is more comfy than the DT770Pro.

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: Buddha: I'm glad that you like the Philips. If you want to expand your collection, I'd also recommend the DT531. And the K501 is another serious resonably priced contender.

*sighs*

That's what I get for assuming, I guess.....

Okay, better question!

Assume a 15 mw/channel PCDP.

WHich is better:

Philips HP890 or Sennheiser HD495?
