So, I listen to techno a lot, I love downloading 100 new songs a day from Klite and just listening to them. A few years ago my parents got me HD600's for xmas, but I find them boring and listen to.. now don't kill me but I find myslef listening to a pair of sony mdrv700 dj's for techno. Being a college student, I don't want to buy a cdp becuase some moron will just spill a beer on it while it sits on my desk in my room. For this reason I am looking for the best possible setup for techno music that is rather "transportable." I would like to take it with me to park possibly... say in a leather bag. It could be locked in a drawer and easily picked up. It would have an amp, a pair of awesome techno cans.. with any cable mods to help them out, and a pcdp or maybe an mp3 player. I like using cd's though. There is just sumthin about lookin through your collection that makes music special. So what would be a great setup? I can spend no more than $2000. I have loans to pay, but two grand should be enough.

Headphones:

Shure E2
Shure E5
Sennheiser HD25-1

Source: PCDP that will play MP3 CDs and is water (or beer) resistant.

I think the V700 lovers are coming out of the closet...

So... yeah. Sony MDR-CD3000, Perreaux SXH1, and... uh... I don't use non-computer audio sources. Can't help there.

Actually, the Perreaux is a sound that would match Senns from what I've seen... IMHO if you want something for Techno, try a Gilmore. Great treble, slam, speed, and really good bass. I can vouch for them now that my V2-SE just arrived today.

I think the Gilmore Lite is small enough to be portable? I dunno if it can be battery powered though...

And I would definitely second the CD3000s for techno. Sometimes psychedelic trance kinda freaks me out on the CD3000s, heh. They just portray those trippy effects so well, sometimes you pull your phones off thinking someone's in the room or something. As far as mods go, getting the cable redone on the CD3000 will make them a really expensive headphone, but IMO it's worth it, since the stock cable for these phones probably cost Sony like 10 cents.

I want to stay away from a pc audio system, I go home somtimes on weekends. I want my audio to travel with me, and my pc is not exactly portable. I have been thinking about the sonys. They seem to be really nice, minus their size. What type of portable source would be best? And are their other options besides the sonys?

EDIT: Well hell, if i got sonys the cd 3000, I would not need a portable amp because I would not be caught dead in public with them. Do any in ear phones sound really good with techno?

Yup, if you do the research CD3000 seems to be a good match for this genre and an Emmeline amp will go well with these cans. I would also recommend ATH A900, as I like them alot.

For techno music and transportable qualities, the Shure E5's are your cans.

Get an ipod, if you don't have one to drive the e5's.

For non-portable,

Nad C542 Cdplayer.

HR-2 Amp.

~ $2000

The ipod - E5 combo for techno is godly.

the C542, (which i am looking to buy soon) seems like a great player.

and the HR-2 amp (which i'd like to get eventually as well) is supposed to be an unbelievable amp.

why ipod? What about the BS where you have to mail them your unit because the battery dies or whatever? blech. My sister uses an iRiver something-or-other and IMO that sounded really really good. *shrug*

Well, I missed the whole 'transportable' bit. Oopsie!

I think a Pocket Reference or an XP7 would be the best options for 'transportable' amps. The lite isn't battery powered, AFAIK.

I would be weary myself of wearing the CD3ks anywhere but at home, but I don't think I'd have the same reservations about the 'baby CD3ks' (ATH-A900s).

Iriver SlimX 550 -> PIMETA -> A900s would be my choice... and is a lot less expensive than the $2000 limit set.

A true DJ can used by Acquaviva and others: Sennheiser HD25-1. Big sound for techno. Another good one is the classic Sony V6. Both go miles unamped.

CD3000 might be good, but tell me you like carrying an amp with you and they look ugly walking around with them.

Earphones can sound good: E2 and E5 for techno seems to be good, a bit on the dark side in terms of sound.

They might be 'ugly'(purely subjective), but they have no need for an external amplifier. Virtually any portable should be able to drive MDR-CD3000 since it's efficiency is speced at 104dB/mW.

For a source I recommend Rio Karma(good for all those music dowloads and ripping all of your cd's to FLAC) or a nice classic pcdp.

JV.

EDIT: Since you do listen to a lot of techno I would definitely reco the Karma over iPod. I just find it has better bass.

my brother bought 2 irivers and both batteries were dead upon opening the package. neither unit had any juice ever...absolutely inexcusable. he and i are done with dealing with such a crap company. maybe for some people this does not happen, but for us it did, and they lost two customers.

as far as the ipod goes, i've had many problems with my ipod and my pc, but when it works, it works very well. i especially love the jog wheel, which truly does make searching the songs on your ipod intuitive; this system is simply light years ahead of any other portable's controls. i love how fast i can find and select a song with nothing but my thumb. also, i've never had to replace the battery in over 2 years i've had it.

IPOD - E5 is my ceiling for the ultimate portable.
NAD C542 - HR-2 is the home setup i would like to get.

i listen to and compose techno music btw.

Which ones do you speak of? Would those ultimate ears sound good with techno? Or what about Prophonics? These are a bit pricey, but if i never have to upgrade again, or at least not within two years.

To my knowledge, battery issue effects only the first batch of units. Than again, I've never had any problems with mine (one of the frist 3G ipods). ipod is a good source.
