What is your idea of a good family of headphones to have and why?
(A family here meaning a set of different headphones that are worth having simultaneously for the long term and complement each other.)
Remember it's not the size that counts.

Im no expert but my 2 cents worth...

Shure SE846's w/Custom Tips
Audeze 3's
Bose NC 25's for traveling.

Just need to source some Audeze's and im good to go. Shures for my electronic/bass heavy stuff like Dubstep + Skrillex. Audeze for serious DSD/DXD listening. and the bose's are cheap, light, comfy and use AAA batterys!!!! All running of iDevices through my soon to have Hugo !!!

He-100+009- they compliment each other nicely. (Higher end version of the audeze+hd800)
Hugo- it reks for desktop use and can be used as a portable dac/amp.
A nice all in one desktop amp like the mha-100 i just bought ^.^ - for serious listening without needing to have upgradititis.
Iems like the 846, k10s, dita answers, etc. - for portable use

Yes my needs are a tad higher than the average consumer...
