I guess everybody has to start somewhere.

I'm ordering one of the new SuperMacros and have my eye on several op amps. They seem to fall into two categories: PDIP and SOIC.

What's the difference between these two types of op amps? Can either be used indiscriminately as op amps with the SM3V6? Is there anything else that one should know?

SOIC is surface mount - it has flat contact pins and is tiny
PDIP is through hole mount- it has bent pins, designed for inserting into IC sockets and such

You want the latter.

The only reason that amp offers both choices is because some chips come in one package but not the other.

I ordered some BUF634 in SOIC because mouser is running out of PDIP type, is there any way to sold SOIC chip on the socket?

Browndog makes adapters for various opamp packages to others. For this you would want a single SOIC to PDIP adapter. Do a search for where to get them. It is possible to fabricate your own however.

yes! but I already ordered them. Maybe it's more fun to play with adapter and those tiny leads than simply insert them into socket. PM replied...
