refault -
i won the tungsten C (NIB) on ebay for $360 sometime in early august of 2003. i just kept bidding the same amount and eventually got lucky (the other tungsten C's were going for 390+ at the time, but somehow mine slipped by). it took about a week

How well do PPCs do without Outlook and things like that? IE i use thunderbird for email.

I am not a fan of any of the microsoft office suite. Basicly what i want to know is how PPC's go with 3rd party sync and things like that.

I would get one but thouse are the things that are holding me back from getting one.

I want wifi for webbrowsing at home and elsewhere, i also has a SE T610 which i'll use the palm fo smsing and web browsing and things like that.

Is there anything else someone could suggest to me?

PPCs require outlook if you want to sync your stuff, and is included with the PPC. I don't think PPC can sync with any Netscape or Mozilla mail programs, but Palm can, and it's supported.

Right now your best option would be a Tungsten C, perhaps with a bluetooth card. Alternately a Tungsten T3 with a WiFi card. There's a new set of handhelds coming out very soon though, so i'd wait and see what they are first.

FYI, I returned the Tungsten C because after 5 replacements I still didn't have a working unit, and the T|T3 because I found the slider annoying. I'm waiting for the new Palm handhelds to be released myself.

How well does palm go with smsing and connecting with a SE T610?

Is the mozilla sync stuff any good or is it just beta. I mean, email isn't that nessesary but its more calendering and appointments, and notes and things alike..

How well does the wifi stuff do searching and connecting to APs (will be used for network job).

I am a bit skeptical about the palm :\

I've never used SMS with a Palm, as i've never had a Palm with Bluetooth. Google for it.

Palm has sync'd with Netscape mail for years, so I assume the Mozilla stuff is pretty good. I used it a few years back, but because typing's so slow without a keyboard I didn't end up using it anyway.

I used my Tungsten C WiFi a few times, and it worked fine. My mate uses WiFi for everything from web surfing to syncing, and he finds it fine.

Palm are a far more mature product than PocketPC - they've been around 10+ years, compared with a few years for the PPC stuff. I've personally used Palms for 5-6 years, and love them. My brief foray into PPC was an expensive mistake (for me).

If anyone's interested in an as-new iPaq 4350, PM me.

just fyi -
the tungsten C will not work with a bluetooth SD card. the drivers have not been written for OS 5.2.1, and probably will never be.
sucks don't it

however - it is extremely easy to use the T|C to connect to access points. you just open the wifi setup utility, it scans for AP's, and you pick the one you want to go to. Couldn't be easier.

Like I said, wait a week or two, new models will definitely be released soon. OS6 models will be released in about 6 months, if you want to wait that long - dunno if I will.

With what loveheadphones said, out of the current crop you'll have to choose if you want WiFi or Bluetooth, as no Palm supports both at the moment. The Tungsten T range has bluetooth, the Tungsten C has WiFi.

Alternately try the Sony PalmOS units. The UX50 has bluetooth and WiFi, but I find the screen a little small. The guy at the Sony Centre here tells me the screen on the not-yet-released UX60 will be larger, but didn't know when it might be released.

Sorrry I can't recommend a single unit, that's why i'm waiting myself.

commando; do they have a paper release for these new palms yet? Like any info on the internet about them? I wouldn't mind reading up on them.

Bluetooth would be alright as i got a bt dongel on the PC so that will do webbrowsing fine and sync, the wifi is just when i am out on the jobsites. Hmmm we'll see what happens in the next few weeks

Cheers all!

Nope, no specs, but I read an interview with the head of palm somewhere that said they'd be announced soon. That's the way it always is though, wait a while and something bette will come along. In my case, none of the current models do what I want, so i'll wait.

Web browsing on any PDA is painful, I gave up after a couple of tries. It's slow, and the screen's to small.

Quite well. Good friend of mine I mentioned uses T616 (basically the same phone) with his T3, and we SMS all the time. SMS is included with the Tungesten. Setting up the internet connectivity is somewhat involved however, I mean it's fairly easy IF YOU HAVE A HOW-TO. Otherwise it'll be a nightmare. You'll need to google the web to find that.
