I'm mainly looking at the D-NE900/920, D-NE10/20-

Perhaps headphone impedance matters too? Anyways, which model in your experience has completely silent background during quiet music passages etc.? I think I've heard that the DNE20 is silent.

Important to me because I plan on listening to vocal music with my next PCDP at home in a quiet environment. Thanks.

I find the D-NE10 to be hiss free with Sennheiser PX-100 (32ohm) phones.

Results can vary.

That's one vote for the DNE10. I've actually been leaning towards it already for the value. I also have PX100s

I have the DNE920 and it is quiet also. Using HD595, HD201, Koss Portapro, and generic Sony Cans. I suspect this is a benefit of digital amps. I have not tried any MP3's, only commerciial CD's.

If I had heard any noise, hum, etc., it would have been returned.

Thanks. I suspect the background sound is usually only noticeable when using canalphones - which typically are low impedance and very sensitive.

None of the (mid to upper end) Sony's should have problems. And even if you do, you're unlikely to get better.
