I am needing a new PCDP...I have $130 to spend. mp3 playback is not required, I have an iPod already. I am looking at the D-NE900 but if anyone has other recommendations then I would be more then willing to take them. I have virtually no special requirements for the player, other then that it sounds great. Thanks for the recommendations!

And what's the difference between the dne10 and dne20?

If you're willing to go a bit older, you could check out the Sony D-465. It has rather good sound by modern standards, 20 seconds ESP so it's decently portable, and will run several hours off of two AAs. It also has an optical out which is kinda spiffy. You can probably find one used (as it's an older model) on eBay for as low as 15-20 dollars. Someone in the for sale forums also has one for sale.

That's quite a bold statement... how many of the Sony models have you heard? (just wondering... I assume you must have heard quite a few).

Its going to be my Christmas gift from my boyfreind, so I would like to pick something that can be bought online fairly easily. I would consider an older model, but I am a little wary of used CD players, as I have had bad luck in the past with them. Thanks again folks.

I saw the D-NE20 on sale at Filene's (in their tiny electronics section) once for $65. I'm kicking myself in the face for not buying that now, looking at how high they sell for on eBay.

I have had the D-NE900 for several months now and it has worked out quite well for me. The sound quality is quite good, I think better than my old Zen Micro, but not quite as good as the DVD player I have at home. The battery life is quite impressive as well, it lasts me about a week, usually listening about 3 hours a day. There are a few issues. The biggest problem with this player is that when it comes close to the end of an album, it begins to make a soft clicking noise. I think it's actually a problem inherent in most PCDPs because I tested it with some other cheap ones lying around the house and they all made the noise too. If you listen in a quiet environment with open headphones, you will probably hear the clicking. There also seem to be a few small problems with the UI on the player, but these aren't a big deal, the player still works quite well.

I should be more specific! I'm comparing the iriver to the current array of sony players (not vintage models). Yes, I've heard the current group of sonys, and again, IMO the iriver sounds best. The bass has real punch and the user adjustable EQ is pretty good. Just an opinion, not a bold statement. By the way, the foks at Headroom rated the slimx series the best when they were offering source recommendations, and there are a number of menbers here that like the slimx

Like many other models for sale lately, some user named 'manoppo2' got it. He outbid me the other day on an Aiwa XP-55 (..grr) and has seemingly been scavenging eBay nonstop for the past month or so, if not more. I guess he has PCDP fever.

I've got a Panasonic SL-CT810 PCDP. A bit harder to find, but well worth it. There's a 820 out now, but I don't know much about it.

The 810's boast is 180 hours life on 2 gumstick batteries. That's playing mp3. With CD's I get a good 30 hours. D.sound, HighMAT, CD-R -RW, 400 second antiskip, etc.

Most valued feature...has optical out.

Sounds very good for a PCDP. While I haven't heard any of the newer Sony PCDP's in a long time, I've got a few vintage ones that the Panasonic compares close to. The vintage ones are nice to play with and listen to at home, but the panasonic is the practical one I actually take outside. There's a slight difference in sound, but the Panasonic holds it own.

The antiskip works well for me just carrying it in a backpack. haven't jogged or exercised with it.

The remote works well, with play/pause/volume/fwd/back on 1 button. Can use it with gloves too! Remote does feel really light though and a bit plasticly. Buttons on the player don't feel very high quality either.

Got mine in Asia for $100.
