Heh.. I've opened a bunch of PCDPs and have yet to disconnect anything..

Sometimes, some wires just come loose over time. Also, is the cable that was loose the ground cable? I know on some of the Sony PCDP's I've opened up, the ground cable comes loose. A lot of times it's attached to a screwpost.

Just an idea..

I was just wondering where the line out of the 955 would fall in all of this........ To be honest, I dont use it much, but it would still be great to know.

I would assume somewhere between the 905 and the 1000 quality wise??

Dudlew:

I've never heard the 905/955/1000. However, I'd guess that the answer is "no" to your assumption. The reason is, Sony has really messed up model numbers. the actuall full model numbers are: D-E905, D-EJ955, and D-EJ1000. While the D-EJ955 may be a notch under the D-EJ1000, the D-E905 was a generation before the EJ's. The D-E905 (being very similar to the D-777 in build and in sound quality) is generally regarded as one of the more "legendary" PCDP's with ESP, something that hasn't been said about a D-EJ955 or D-E1000.

...I received the D311 today

Totally mint condition, including original earbuds (E552), remote, and all stickers on the unit

Shame it isn't in the original box, but can't win them all

I was sufficently curious to outbid a certain duncan_**** but conscience beat me to it. Let me know how superior they are to the D-141 from a regulated mains supply, I might hunt down another one.

This may well shatter the whole point of the 'shootout' that i've proposed, but even running from batteries, this D311 totally destroys the D777 and E905... I really can't believe how crap they sound!
eek.gif

The 777 and 905 sound unbelievably thin, and they have absolutely zero definition compared to the 311... the mids are also non existant on the other two players compared to the 311...

As has been mentioned here, it really is a class above the other 'high end' players...

Compared to the 141, which seems to be a ridiculously overlooked player... a classic within its own rights, the bass on the 141 is slow, and bloated... and there is a definite lack of definition, but overall I would rate the D141 nearer to the D311 than either the 777 or the E905!

What sets the 311 apart from ALL the other Discmen I have though, is its ability to seperate instruments... is unnerving from what is essentially a 'run-around' CD player

Wow!

Is the 955 really a notch below the 1000 or is it that it was a model previous to the 1000? I got the impression that it was a previous model from my scanty research.

Did it not come out before the 1000?

Dudlew...

The 925 was the previous years top of the range unit... then the 955 came out at the same time as a 'premium' design 1000...

The 1000 designator became the new top of the range

Headphone...

...Couldn't ruin my pending review TOO much

...But, seriously ~ how good the D311 is, it doesn't need to be used through the line out
biggrin.gif

...for now, but of course that could all change

I tested purk's D-777 and D-311 and I preferred the d-777, though it could have been the headphones and amp that made the difference. The D-311 disappointed because the midrange was too strong, it sounded quite bloated. The D-777 sounded to me well balanced. Didn't think the midrange was thin.

The D-141 is a great player, I own one now. The mids and highs are just right, the bass as you said does sound bloated and undefined. The D-303 has much better bass definition but overall is dark sounding.

vrao81...

You may well have a point there, the CD1700s I have do seem to sound a little slow on the 311, not as enjoyable as on the D50... whereas, the D66 Eggos sound like... well, damned great through the 311
