I recently moved and my PC went from connecting to my TV to down stairs in the basement. I used to have my PC connected to my receive a Pioneer VSX-815 through my Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit. I used the SPDIF connector (Vista drivers do not work for optical out) and listened to flac at 96kHz/24-bit. The sound on my Senn HD555's is incredibly better than simply connecting straight to the SB Live.
My question is, will any old receiver work simply because it is amplifying the sound? I'd really like to stick to a receiver with SPDIF but my budget is very limited at the moment. So what I can do for now is get an old receiver at ARC or Goodwill and use that. Is it worth it? Any brands I should look for in 80's/70's model receivers? Since I will be going from the mini stereo jack now to RCA, what connector is good, what brand? I use a simple mini stereo to RCA Y connector from radio shack, but its cheaply made and I usually have to buy a new one every 3 months.
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.
