PC as source to rival standalone CDP?

Just pondering and couldn't find much in the archives cause I don't know quite what to look for. With all the talk about noisy, inacurrate transports I'm wondering if it makes more sense just to go straight from hard drive do digital out on a good soundcard to a standalone DAC... I'd like to know what you guys think of this with regard to cost and sound quality. Thanks.

Yes, that's an excellent option. Just be sure your sound card outputs a clean digital signal. Many people on this board use the Audiophile 24/96 sound card in conjunction with an external ART DI/O DAC.
