I'm thinking of adding some active monitors to my system, but since they will likely share the output level from the 0404 usb with the headphone chain, they will need a mute switch (like my frankenstein z2300's have, currently).

Is anyone aware of a compact solution (not an old 4-way AV input selector) that doesn't run $400?

While it's not a mute switch, I use an NHT PVC (Passive Volume Control) with my monitors. The build quality is high and the price is affordable-- got my balanced version for $90 with 6$ cashback or so shipped through some vendor I found through Microsoft Live. It was drop shipped from NHT in California in about four days. I think the standard RCA version is $75.
