Anyone have any experience with this unit? I just bought one and gave it a listen. Sounds great to me. Way to good to be a Panasonic. Any comments??

Thanks!

Hi,
Glad to see this thread

I own an rp91, and it's been my main source for several months now. I have occasionally made brief comments about how much I like the sound. I like it *way* better than my stock RME digi PAD soundcard + foobar2000. At least compared to the RME it's got a warm, smooth, musical sound without sacrificing detail. The RME is too harsh and dry for my tastes (is that really anyone's taste?

)

I'm currently using it with a Gilmore V2, HD650's and a Clou Red, and all my headphone, amp, and headphone cable upgrades up to now have been easily discernable with the rp91. Even the HD580-to-HD600 upgrade showed a nice improvement (so much for headroom's "you need at least a $$$$ player to hear the difference"). Bad matches are immediately apparent, as well. I think that's a sign of a decent source. To top it off, the 480i video output for dvds is amazing and it was long thought of as having the best 480i under $1K (I use an HTPC as an external video processor, so all I need is that 480i). Crutchfield was selling these things scratch & dent for $255 shipped not long ago (they may still have some), and damn, at that price, for all you get (audio and video), it's one hell of a deal. It was originally Panasonic's flagship DVD player from 2001-2002, back when being their flagship meant something, and it sold for $700.

Of course, due to head-fi I still have a raging curiosity as to what a better source would sound like. I'd also love to know how much I'd have to spend to see a worthwhile improvement - maybe a Rega Planet 2000? From what I read this sounds like it might have a similar tonal balance and thus similar matching requirements. Anyone have any experience with both the rp91 and good CD players?

Another major plus to this Panasonic However, I'm using it now with a Fisher 400 and a set of K1000's.

I couldn't afford this Panasonic "back in the days" but got one of the lower models.

As long as it's not offensive with K1000, that's good. Enjoy your new system.

Thank you for your well wishes. Why would it be offensive with the K1000's?

I think the K1000s is one of the hardest headphone to get right. If there's any harshness or "disturbances" in the treble, it just gets annoying. So it's important to have smooth treble in my opinion.

Oh, yeah, I agree.
