I'm contemplating buying a pCDP to replace my MDP for at home listening (not going to be used outside). specially since the Pana sl-ct480 is currently going for a very nice price at a store around here.

is the Pana CDP up to snuff soundwise compared to my MDP? I know my headphones aren't all that, but I can still notice relatively small differenes between sources, specially when it comes to clarity. it'll be a step up in convienence, but I'm afraid it''ll be a step down in clarity... (the mx500s don't want less clarity!)

nope, no amp. I know the 570 should be good, but it's way hard to get. specially around here.

I think my Sony MZ-E900 sounds better then my Pana 570 through the headphone out, if that helps any.

Braver,
I've never heard the Pana 480. However, i suspect that my 1997 and 1998 top of the line PCDPs, Pana Sl-S651c, and sl-s500 (the one that Cmoy has)...do not sound any better than my Sharp Mt-831 and sound eqaully good as the 480. And assuming that the MT80 sounds as good as the Mt-831, thus, the MT-80 should smoke the Pana 480.
Why don't get a newer Sony discman with good line out and use amp+good headphone...that would be a better solution. By the way, why don't you just audition the 480 and tell us your opinion.

Purk

p.s.
if, 651=500=480
but, mt831 => mt80>> 651 and 500
Thus, Mt 80 > pana 480

The sound of an MDP will piss all over the sound of any newer PCDP. MD headphone amps are of much higher quality. I don't think you'd get much from the CT480 that you don't already have.

Getting a PCDP with a line out is most invaluable, so, if you're hung up on getting a portable CD player, check out some of the hig-end Sony units, as Purk suggested.

what would indeed be sweet is a pCDP with line and optical outs. but they're way too expensive and only by Sony.. well, guess I'll just buy a load of MB blanks then, more fun that way anyway

(the better headphones idea is cool....hmmm. lol, seriously, I'd like to her the Beyer DT250-80 some time, but not going to buy it before I hear it. for over 100$ more expensive than the mx500, it'll have to be significantly better)

I know my panasonic SL-S310 PCDP is a lot worse than my Sharp SR70 MDP.
But why not just get a cheap component CDP? The lower-end Technics, Philips, Sony, etc etc models will be much better than any portable and many have optical out and a headphone-jack with volume control. It's easy to find one 2nd hand for cheap.

cause I like the way my current setup can be unplugged from the wall-power and slipped into a pocket. a component setup is in the works tho, cause I want to replace my micro. it'll be a small speaker setup, but I don't have the space for that right now.
