Other good British bands like 'Coldplay' and 'The Doves'?

Or, how about one of the primary influences on Radiohead/Coldplay, the Smiths and Morrissey? Rhino has a nice collection of Morrissey solo work newly remastered. Still waiting for the Smiths 80's albums to get the modern re-master treatment! I can't believe they haven't updated CD sound on these yet, it's a travesty.

Just wanted to express content at the fact that Doves is getting more recognition! And it's "Doves," not "The Doves," by the way.

I saw them perform here in Los Angeles at The Mayan theatre last year, and Elbow opened for them, too, which is also an awesome band. I just loved how Elbow's songs progressed and kept building up throughout. Very euphoric, as is Doves.

Have you tried checking out Soundtrack of Our Lives? I don't think they sound like Doves, but I did like them very much when my friend sampled some.

Btritish Bands? In my opinion the 80s had a ton of good British bands. The Joy Division, The Pyschedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunneymen, The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses, The Primitives, The Alarm, The Mission UK and The Chameleons UK. Of these, I like the Chamaleons the best.

Stupidest name for a band ever. Can you imagine going into a store: "Yes, I'd like 'Music'?" "What do you think we sell here?"

People need to think from the perspective of Internet search engines. Pink was no better.

I wouldn't say that the music of ELBOW sound "a lot" like Coldplay, they are not definitely a clone band, they have their own sound, but I can say, trying to answer your question, that their music leans more towards Coldplay (with some Pink Floyd hints too) than more recent electronica Radiohead.

To my ears one of their biggest influences is Catherine Wheel. Elbow has a definate shoegazer feel to me, but they add piano which gives them a sort of earthy feel. "Power Blue" is the most definate Radiohead nod, but other tracks sound completely different. "Scattered Black and Whites" is a beautiful track with strummy accoustic guitars, while "Newborn" is probably the most proggy track. Can't wait for them to come out with a new album.

As for the debate on Doves, I prefer "Lost Souls" to "Last Broadcast".. "Rise" and "Sea Song" are two of the most powerful songs I've heard in years.. and "Cedar Room" is epic.

Try Delirious. A great melodic band a la U2. They´re always experimenting and changing. Try Mezzamorphis or Glo or King Of Fools (albums of them).

Someone mentioned these guys a few posts back. I really like "This is My Truth, Tell Me Yours" and the previous one, "Everything Must Go." (Their last, "Know Your Enemy" is NOT recommended.) This is not exactly Coldplay/Doves territory; it's very sophisticated rock/pop, well-produced, sometimes includes horns (gasp!). Quite brilliant, tho; had "Truth" in my Discman for weeks and weeks when I first got it. (Ironically, this band started out much more "punk;" their main songwriter disappeared (literally) just before recording of "Everything Must Go." When one of the other guys took over the songwriting, they became much more popular, to the dismay of the original core of fans.) RECOMMENDED.
