I know. Not just Foreign, it's my vote for film of the year,  But if you want to stick with the noms, then I'll vote Black Swan with Winter's Bone nipping at it's heels. Overall, I thought it was a mediocre year for studio films; really wouldn't have a problem with any of the big five contenders.

For the actors, I like Firth (who should should also won last year for A Single Man), Bening (so good though Portman is the odds on fave), Hawks (really tough category for me, I also loved Renner), and easily Weaver in Animal KingDom for SA. Directer wise, 'tis Aronofsky all the way. Doc would be Exit Through the Gift Shop, which is worthy of a best picture nod, as far as I'm concerned.

Just my opines. Hopefully some more will weigh in. Here is my personal EoY top five:

1. Dogtooth
2.. Exit Through the Gift Shop
3. Black Swan
4. Winter's Bone
5. Mother

Why are all the links sending me to a dead headfi page?

Nice thread, i have been away from the theaters this year .. and the only movies that get here anyways are the most commercial ones, usually those are the bad ones. Id kill for an independent cinema around here.. but i can only dream. i saw just 4 of those in the poll and only one i like was Inception, Ive heard goos stuff about black swan, will try to get it somehow ..

I just dragged and dropped it here, from imdb, don't know about the links...

I like Hollywood and arthouse cinema both. Sometimes I'm in the mood for the arty-farty cinematographic thing, sometimes I want to just sit and watch a nice and simple action movie or comedy.
I had a period when I was only watching foreign language movies, had a few months I only watched classics. These days I'm still watching a lot of the movies, but I can appreciate anything, as long as it's good, and as long as it's not horror.

Horror brings me to Black Swan. In most ways that movie will be seen as the best of the year and I can see why. Thing is, I don't enjoy a movie when I'm spending 2 hours being frightened about what I'm going to see next. More cutting scenes? Aranovsky clearly wants to shock with his explicit way of presenting some things. I don't like that. Emotionally shocking, like his Requiem for a Dream, ok, but not visually, like The Wrestler and Black Swan.

Except for Black Swan, I liked every nominated movie for best picture. I actually think I has been a good year, Hollywood movie wise. Arthouse had better years though.
My vote for best picture is a real tough one this year. There's no 'top 10 movie ever' been made this year, but in the category just under that, there were a few very good ones, very close to eachother: Inception, The Kid's are allright, The King's Speech, True Grit, Winter's Bone.
My choice between them is True Grit, just slightly above The King's Speech.

Actor: definitely Colin Firth
Actress: Anette Bening (although Julianne Moore deserves it just as much) or Nathalie Portman
supporting actor: Christian Bale, for sure
supporting actress: Hailly Steinfeld (True Grit) although not sure this is a supporting role?!
Director: Tom Hooper (King's Speech)
Foreign Movie: only saw 3 of them yet, but Biutiful was stunningly good
Best animated: How to train your dragon (finally they beat Pixar)

No I don't think so (and also don't hope so), I think Black Swan and The King's Speech will be the 2 big winners
