I've just received a SAC/AKG amp which has standard K1000 outputs on the front. Previously i was using the supplied K1000 to speaker wire to extend its range and drive it out of my intergrated speaker outputs. Now I'm using the mini lead of my K1000 from the SAC amp, but its not long enough to reach my listening position of my bed.

So i'm on the look out for an extension cable to do the job. Quality semi important, but if possible i'd prefer avoiding the so called hifi cables out there to do the job. I fear this wont be an option as they're the only cables to do the job.

Don't even know if its a standard 4pin XLR termination. The pins look slightly rotated off what would be a symetrical layout around the hole for the latch of the connecting socket. Don't know if this is standard or an AKG specialised connector.

It uses standard 4 pin XLR. If you have basic soldering skills it is very easy to make an extension.

You will need Neutrik NC4FX-B and NC4MX-B. And then four wires, the Standard Starquad would suffice, as it has four wires. Just make sure to wire them correctly (the pins are numbered, match the numbers).

Yeah, the pins are "off centered" so they only plug in one way.

what are the requirements for the actual cable used in this extension lead, or if i was to get an adapter made also to use other headphones with this amp. Its been so long since i brought speaker cable for speakers that i forgot the differences. Are they a difference impedence/ohm-age for speakers than to interconnects? I have someone who may be building me a cable. Just wanted to be sure i specified the right stuff, and that it wasn't interconnect style cable used instead. What would be the problems in using interconnect cable for this application?

Roughly what are the prices for extension leads made by the audiophile brands. I've forgotten who makes them, and how much they go for. Stefan Audio Art is one that i just remembered. Is that the only one? Though they look like they're not made anymore anyways.

I made my own extension cable for my K1000s using a spare section of Kimber 8TC speaker cable (which has 16 separate conductors and a combined wire size of two 9 gauge conductors). It was a royal pain to strip and solder all those tiny wires for the XLR connections, but the sound is killer good. Maybe it's all in my head, but I believe that the K1000s sound better with the extension than without.

Kimber 8TC is expensive wire, about $14 a foot the last I saw, but it's still less than a Stefanaudioart cable.
