Yes, but there are some caveats. If you want HDCD to be decoded, the DAC on the other end must include a hardware HDCD decoder (very few DACs support this). For DSD, the player must support digital output via a proprietary copyright-protected Firewire-based interface (ex. Denon's "Denon Link," Pioneer's "iLink"), and of course you must have a receiver that will accept and decode this proprietary digital signal.

So for most people, the answer to both questions is no, though you can always try to get HDCD to output from Windows Media Player.

i just read stereophile's review on this too, and i'm glad to be a current owner of the 970HD - i took it to the last NYC Regional and folks seemed to like it with both DVD-A and SACD pumped through a STAX system.

for redbook tho, it's still best to use just as a transport to my external DAC-ah, after which good tunes arise.
