Can someone explain to me why Oppo players are so well regarded as transports? I am currently shopping around for the best transport I can get under $600.

Is it gapless for DVD-A?
And this is the US model since it doesn't have SCART?
What DAC chips are in there?
Region locks? There is no 'how to' for region free? You got to love the corporations there...

If you're using SCART you may as well buy a cheap DVD player/BD player as it's limited to 576i. Region set for Oppo DVD players is done with remote control, but so far looks like region mod for the Oppo 83 is hardware. I wonder if new movies will detect if the unit is modded and refuse to play (like RCE)

can region free the image with slysoft, put it on a pen/thumb drive and play it through there...if you are so inclined...

but ya, a mod would be best...

has anyone tried to play any 1080p .mkv or .flac?...

maybe more to come with software updates...
