The HD555 also come in a 50 ohm version. I would not suggest you choose the HD555 over the AD700 though. The AD700 are much better overall in my opinion, especially in detail and clarity. They are also better for rock music than the HD555.

While the AD700 may be better then the HD555 (I don't know as I have never heard the AD700) It is my understanding the the HD595 bests both the HD555 and the AD700. The HD595 can be picked up for ~ 160 on the FS forum.

FYI: I have a pair for sell but they are out of your price pint do to an installed cable upgrade.

That may be true but Ive seen people say the AD700 even beat the HD595. Cant say for sure though since I never heard the HD595. The AD900 definately beats the HD595 if you can find it cheap but ive never found it for less than $220.

Last question before i stop bugging you guys, and who knows maybe with this purchase i'll become a full audiophile like so many here!

What about the AKG K-601, I'd stretch my budget if these are an all around solid upgrade from the AD 700s, and AKGs look cool to me too, for a big ass full ear headphone that is...

at 120 ohms for the 601s is that still okay on my sound card? or would i not really experience it properly.

The K601 needs an amp, take it from me. You need one just to get volume (it's relatively inefficient), let alone the SQ that comes with external amplification.

I haven't heard the AD700 but Audio-Technica headphones in general make for great un-amped listening from anything.

Damn, i was really hoping they'd be able to be used without an amp. I suppose I'll wait a while and make this my birthday present.

I'll start looking around for amps then that go well with the 601's.

Edit: almost fell off my chair when looking at this.

The Desktop Line - HeadRoom - Right Between Your Ears

i thought like regular amps were less than $50, and only serious amps got to be that much!

This sounds like very good advice, especially when you factor in your lack of an amp and also wanting to play games and watch movies. You can add an amp later and in the mean time you will have great sounding cans.

Eh, i see this behringer 4 way microamp that is around $20, i wouldnt mind getting that along with the AKG 601's. I dont want an amp that costs more than what my computer is worth >.>

edit: it also would be nice so i dont have to crawl underneath my desk to switch out headphones with this either!

Don't bother trying to amp the K601 with less than $100 to play with. Oh there are <$100 options that will give you volume, but none will give you quality. And the K601 would benefit a lot from an external DAC too. Stick with an Audio-Technica.
