Open source software for mp3 encoding?

EAC + aktual LAME 3.98
Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc. don't offer secure ripping. Second best to EAC is CD Paranoia based Rippers, which exist for nearly every OS.

Another vote for EAC and LAME here.

Side note....anyone know how to make EAC embed the album art?

Akathisia. May I ask why you limit yourself to open source software?
Lots of free and powerful applications out there (EAC, Foobar2000, ..) which are eliminated by this requirement. A shame really!

I guess I misused the term open source. I told you I'm not the most computer savvy. Free would be the term I was looking for I guess.

Lots of good recommendations on software, including tips on improving what I already have. I'll let you know what I end up using.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I just downloaded the newest version of EAC, and it works perfectly for what I wanted. Thanks for all the help

Read some of the tutorials that are out there and set it up how they say to get the most out of the program. It really is a fantastic ripper when set up right.

When I've ripped with Windows, I've had great success with Audiograbber + LAME. However, I normally rip from Linux using the cdparanoia-based GRIP, with a script that runs FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, and LAME. I usually listen to FLAC on the computer, and Ogg on my Rockboxed e260.

Using the FLAC download from here and this guide from the Hydrogen Audio Wiki I am setup perfectly. I have it naming my tracks exactly how I like them, and my completed reports look great.
