I was wondering what the best open source software that will run on Vista is for ripping cd to mp3? I used to use a 'free' copy of Nero and really enjoyed it (interface, options, speed and ease of use), but I am trying to steer clear of the less than moral route. I just picked up a new laptop that came pre-loaded with Vista and I don't like using WMP for my ripping. My preferred formats are 192-320kbps and adjustable automatic tagging, like Nero's, would be great.

JetAudio

And it's one hell of a media player too

Years ago, back when I still used Windows, I had great success with CDex.

The newer versions of EAC are considerably easier to set up than before in my opinion. CDex is easier to use, but not quite as good. I've had a dozen of so CDs that ripped with skips (it didn't return any errors) and a few that failed to rip at all under CDex, but EAC managed to rip them with no problems.

Having said that the problems I've had were with older CDs . . .

Yet another post for jiggafelz's EAC guide.

I suggest EAC with LAME

Edit:
Noticed you said "Open source", which eliminate EAC.
So lets sa CDex and LAME then...

If you have Vista, then you have WMP11 onboard, which uses professional FhG mp3 encoder. Rip to 320kb/s mp3 using WMP and be happy - you get better codec than LAME (FhG outperfroms in lowest ~128kb/s, and highest bitrates the LAME's), you get automatic cover download for your albums (forget freedb.org based software to do this), automatic file naming and tagging. What else do you need? All you should do in the WMP is turn on error correction for ripping from the CD Audio device. You can find it in the Options->Rip applet.

I prefer to use foobar2000 myself... I find it does just about everything I want

Even though EAC is not open source it is free. I highly suggest EAC + Lame (Some run custom versions) Use one of the guides to set it up. I have not seen a better rip and encoding tool for the quality and speed.

Akathisia. May I ask why you limit yourself to open source software?
Lots of free and powerful applications out there (EAC, Foobar2000, ..) which are eliminated by this requirement. A shame really!
