these will be for gaming but I don't plan on going to any LANs so would open be the better choice? i am probably getting the hd555s.

If isolation is no priority, open cans are definitely to be preferred in the price segment we're talking about. (As a rule of thumb, closed cans require more effort and expertise on part of the manufacturer to get right.) The lower the price, the more pronounced this gets.
