I love my A900's, especially unamped from an iPod.

I'd like to find an open design set of can's with a similar "signature" to the A900's.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Also Sony MDR-F1... probably the closest thing, Audio Technica and Sony are in the same sound signature family. MDR-F1 is less aggressive, more distant though.. not quite as intimate.

Actually, Audio Technica also makes open-air headphones, but I never tried any of them, so I can't say for sure. Those are definitely candidates as well, heck, they're from the same company.

Any comments on the Grado SR225's in this regard?

I have the Senn 580's, and the lack of mid range clarity/presence (at least to me) bothers me.

I also have the Grado SR60's, so I am aware of the "Grado sound", but they seem to lack a bit of the "punch" of the A900's. Would the SR225's give me back that "punch"?

Never thought Grado could be similar at all, due to their lack of soundstage. Although I do think SR-225, when properly amped, adds a lot of punchiness and slam to the sound.

if i recall corrently, i dont think the grado sr225 will match it in that department. i think the sr325 will come close, if you can stand the highs.

Good question:

Need to hear my pager, phone, intercom at my desk. Can't quite pull it off with the ATH A-900's

Just so you know.. even with open-air headphones, unless you're playing at a low to moderate volume, the music is still most likely to cover up those type of background noises.

I can tell from experience (SR-60's & Senn HD580's vs. A-900's) that the "cover up" of background noises, at least in my environment, is not nearly as much.

i agree with lindrone said there, you still have to play it on low level to hear outside noise... which means you can pretty much do the same thing with your A900 too, dont need to get open cans.

one more thing though, open cans leaks lots of sound, you might annoy people nearby.

Maybe someone should let go of the volume knob... Wink wink, lindrone
