Open Cans: Best all-arounders for under 500 bucks?

Unfortunately these threads turn into a headphone popularity contest, most people own HD600s, followed by K701s, DT880 and so on. From looking at your current headphone inventory I see you have a Fostex T50RP and would be inclined to suggest the Sony SA5000 if you're looking for more of the same. Sennhesier HD600 and the likes I've found to be recessed and boring and a no-go with electronica. If on the other hand you want to improve upon the Yamaha RH-5Ma for bass-driven music I'd suggest something Ultrasone, great bass with the introduction of a soundstage.

It really depends on the kind of music you like.

I like classic rock, acoustic folk, jazz and pop.  Grados are very dynamic and great knockaround cans.  For $200, you can easily get an SR225, the best economy Grado out there.

But if you want lots and lots of bass slam, maybe you should go darker.  If you want polite cans that tend toward a flat response, Sennheiser owns that island.

Figure out what you like to hear and there will be a can that does it better than anything else - and probably for less.

I heard K701, AD900 and DT990/600

Going with DT990. I always feel like AD900 and K701 keep missing low notes. Sure the mids aren't forward but I never feel it's missing notes.

I voted for the DT880, I just wanted to qualify that vote by saying that this only holds for the 600 ohm version. I would not bother wasting your time and money on the other DT880 variants.

So far I've narrowed it down to well just about everything on the list, and a few that aren't, although at the moment I think the 600ohm dt990's are at the top of my list... If the new Audeze orthos came in under the $500.00 mark I would have already ordered them based on all the gushing reviews so far, but alas, I don't feel like spending that much. Maybe that is one of the hazards of this website as reviews of those top-enders can make merely great mid-priced models seem unworthy.
