You tap the signal going into your amp and build a small cmoy style amplifier with a variable gain control. So the signal splits into 2 separate amps. THe main amp, and the VU metre amp. Then listen to music and adjust the level to taste.
Don't forget the precision rectifier part of the opamp circuit AND to have a high enough impedance going to the meter so it does load down the output and suck actual power from the audio signal .
Everything connected to the amp output has an effect and the trick is to minimize the bad and reinforce the good.
