Onkyo sound card

It's not worth the price. It's just a low-end PCI soundcard which supports neither 24-bit audio nor sampling rates higher than 48kHz, with expensive gee-whiz parts added to it. In other words, you'd be paying way too much money for a soundcard that's limited to 16-bit/48kHz output.

There are two different cards here, the top one at audiocubes is a SE80 and seems to have a production date starting 2002, so its old...

The one Edwood has pasted a pciture of is a SE150, much newer and a better spec.

http://www.jp.onkyo.com/wavio/150pci/index.htm

It is a great card. The analogue line out via VLSC is great . The DAC used is WM 8716. VLSC help reduce the jitter from the DAC.

http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products...io/?flash=true

For 7.1; it uses codec WM8776 for front (L/R) and the other 6 channel using DAC WM8766.

Card support 24bit at 44.1, 48, 96 & 192 kHz for PCM and 48 only for AC3.

The card is designed for great playback n not great for recording with the added function of spdif passthru and for gaming( though not as good as Audigy 2zs and above cards ).

Those caps are 2200uF and here is a www site that explain why huge storage is good.

Can mod DAC WM 8716 to WM 8740?

If I am reading that right, its ~12000 yen which is only ~$110...

One of the computer Hardware store in Singapore brought in 2 from Japan. I got the last one at S$270 ( ~US$160 very steep )

There is another post here months ago which showed giant cap mod

$160 is ok, I paid $140 for my 0404 in the uk!

How does it sound and what do you have as a reference? Does it do 88.2khz too?

My previous setup is as follows:

Digital (spdif) soundstorm input to Yamaha RX-V430 (AVR) running monitor audio bronze 2 front speakers (with a bunch of other small speakers for surround and centre when watching dvd or gaiming).

When listening to audio, somehow I have this feeling that certain instruments are missing or not so defined. Usually I pumped up the higher frequency in the EQ (both nvidia software and on the amp). Somehow, the sound quality did not sound the same when I was auditing the speaker at the audio shop using audiophile amp and cd player.

With the onkyo sound card, everything sounded just right with flat setting. Vocals and soundstage are improved and it sound as good as when I audited the speaker at the speaker audio shop. (Take this with a pinch of salt as it was about 2 yrs back).

Anyway, the sound quality from the Onkyo can't go wrong with the quality components used.

The line out ( dedicated 2 channel via DAC WM 8716) also sounded much better than the front out (7.1) from DAC WM8776. I can always hear the difference when blind folded after I toggle between these input to my AVR.

Anyway, all these comments are subjective. By the way, the card is able to output spdif, 2 channel line out and 7.1 all at the same time.

Spec defined 88.2 supported but I cannot find any setting on the VIA drivers with this selection. So cannot confirm.

Anyway, I will try out if the drivers from prodigy 7.1 works with this card tonight.
