Hey guys,

I just ordered a DT990 250 from Amazon today. While I read that these aren't as hard to drive as the 600 ohm version, they still need to be amped.

I have an Onkyo TX SR502B AV receiver that is connected optically to my computer, and I'm using the headphone out on that to power my headphones. Will this receiver deliver enough power to drive the Beyers? I'm hoping that it is, so I don't have to spend $200+ on an amp (although the Fiio E7+E9 sure does look nice).

Here's a link to the Onkyo:

Thanks!

Having no idea on today's receivers, me, having a vintage 70's receiver, have successfully driven 300Ohm phones to ear-splitting levels on 70% volume. You may try replacing the resistors between the main amp chips and the headphone out (presuming your receiver has no standalone opamp for the headphone out). But I did know a guy who drove a pair of K1000's directly using the speaker ports of a 75W amp.

I am kind of wary about changing the resistors inside the receiver though. I guess I'll just get the headphones and see how loud they go.

Ah. If it doesn't work, you can always get a Schiit Asgard. $250, very very well regarded here. Or maybe step up to the Valhalla, seems to be good for mid-resistance phones, for $350. Schiit sure is making some great, um, Schiit.
