Old amp rattles and distorts the sound when I turn the volume control.

The buzz may be caused by a ground problem. You could try plugging the digital (cd player) / and or PC and monitor and TV into a different house circuit than the amp. You can also try moving the location of the amp away from other electronic equipment to see if that helps. Also be sure that the power cord is not in a big tangle of multiple power cords. Halogen lamps also can cause a buzz in the circuit. If you are listening to a turntable, be sure it is grounded well - they are known to causes buzz if not well grounded.

For the spray, be sure to spray and turn the knob at the same time (unplug first of course).

Good old hi-fi stuff is going for a bundle on e-Bay...
