I might go for some 601s. Comparing the freq. graphs at headphone.com, they seem to have everything I thought was lacking in the AD700s.

I'm surprised they don't seem to get a lot of mention here - I guess they are overshadowed by the 701s.

Seriously, I'm wondering that too. I spent weeks trying to find a K501 and I only found like two. One was off ebay.de and the other was from a dude in Chicago who would tell me why the shipped price was so much higher than the listed one. Whatever, I have a K500 now so I'm good.

I plan on trying some K601s shortly. My guess is that the K601 is unfairly overlooked.

That's what it seems like from impressions. I haven't read a single negative thing about the K601 while K701 impressions are all over the place. It's probably similar to the K40x models and probably sounds more like an AKG than the K701 is supposed to.

I just wonder: are there any amps ~$100 capable of driving these with sufficient quality? If not, it makes the ATH AD900s seem like a worthy contender with these. Anyone compare those two specifically? I'm searching for threads but not finding any yet...

I think there was a fellow aussie head-fier who had both the K601 and AD900. If I remember correctly, he sold the K601 and kept the AD900. Not sure if he had any impressions though, BUT I remember reading some of his impressions in his FS thread. I'll go try and find it.

I got mine on the FS forum and sold it there as well. I got two K500s from Ebay and from from the FS forum here. They do turn up once in a while although not as frequent as you'd think from all the posts here.

I came across a store called Spearit Sound last night while shopping for speakers. According to their homepage (which claims to have been updated yesterday), they are selling new K501s for $199. I know nothing about this company and I've never bought anything from them, but it might be worth checking out if you don't want to buy used.
