biggrin.gif

i'm leaving on September 28th and coming back on October 7th, so i have a good week and a half. i'm staying in Kowloon and would like to have some suggestions of roaming around there and Hong Kong Island... preferebly looking for some good head-fi gear deals and Oakleys.

oh, i might add that it helps that i understand the local language, although i can't conversate very well... they'll know in an instant i'm a "jook sing."

Bong,

My past trips to HK were always pleasant. If you're in Kowloon, there are many electronics shops around the main street, but make sure you do your research on prices. Many times I found the internet and domestic online vendors to be more reliable and equally cheap.

The best thing to shop is for cosmetics for your wife and/or girlfriend in HK island shopping areas. Also check out those hi-end China-made cdp, tube amps, inte-amps, etc. You should be able to find some shops which directly deals with those wonderful China-made hi-fis.

Make sure you go to Soho area, I really liked Austrailian restaurants there. Of course Chinese restaurant in Grand Hyatt is superb as well.

If you're in Kowloon, head down Nathan Road, which is the main street of Kowloon. Go to Mongkok, there's a section where hi-fi shops are heavily concentrated. I remember posting about this a long time ago....I will look for that thread and link it to this thread later.

Hop on over to Hong Kong island and have a beer for me at Mad Dog's. Man, that was a wild New Years celebration

As mentioned above, Nathan Road in Kowloon is a great starting point for shopping.

I wouldn't buy from the electronics stores along Nathan Road. The ones in TST especially are known for targeting tourists/non-locals with shady practices.

The large electronics chain stores such as Fortress and Broadway are OK, but carry mostly mass-market gear. You won't find Grados or headphone amps there.

Here's a list of shops you might be interested in. Some text is encoded in Traditional Chinese.

Yeah, avoid those stores along Nathan Rd. Not good.

Lookout for Sai Yeung Choi Street, just beside Tung Choi St(Ladies Market). Lots of electronic stuffs. Both streets are in Mongkok.

Times Square at Causeway Bay have quite a few electronic chain stores.

Tip: Shop at the places where the locals shop.

Touristy? You can try taking the Star ferry across to HKG island, followed by a tram ride (Peak Tram) to Victoria Peak. On a clear day, the view is wow! Stanley Market is another touristy place.

Amen. So dress light.
Oh, and one word of advice: don't bother with Disneyland. It's tiny. And I mean TINY.

Forgot to mention about eye glasses or sunglasses shops. They're really cheap in HK. When I was in HK, I picked up 2 pairs of glasses which could easily cost me $1000 in nyc at half the price.

Also the watches are very competively priced, but make sure you go to the authorized dealers where the manufacturers would post its addresses on their internet site.

I would go to HK with empty suitcases.
